Edward J. Sarton, Jr (Jay) passed away on October 12, 2025 at age 79. He was born in Arlington, MA on August 23, 1946. He spent most of his life on the East coast except for 3 years in California, where he met his wife of 55 years, Cheri. Jay was a resident of Gray, ME for the past 19 years. He is survived by his wife, Cheri Sarton; their four children: Christopher, Matthew, Adam, and Katherine; and their four grandchildren: Julien, Olivia, Phoenix and Julian.
Jay loved the outdoors and spent considerable time camping, hiking, kayaking, and gardening. He devoted his life to science education: planetarium shows at Gri th Observatory in California; teaching math, physics and astronomy to high school students; was director of the Kopernik Observatory in Vestal, NY; and had his own science education consulting business. While in Maine Jay taught astronomy at Central Maine Community College and physics at the University of Southern Maine. He saw science as the natural curiosity that stimulated investigation of the world and universe around us.
Jay was a devoted father. He took his children camping, coached their recreational sports teams, and spent hours sharing his love of science with them. He will be greatly missed by his family and those who knew him.
Details of his Celebration of Life have not been confirmed at this time. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Southern Maine in Scarborough, ME.
