Edward Slenk, Jr. Obituary

Published by Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home on Jan. 10, 2022.
Our beloved husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa, Edward Slenk Jr., age 86, of Holland went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, January 10, 2022. To view Ed's funeral service, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/162113063827221/videos/3048058095511253/?__so__=channel_tab&__rv__=all_videos_card. Ed had a gentle, quiet spirit and loved the Lord with all his heart. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His greatest joy was seeing his family all together. He diligently had morning devotions with mom, enveloping the family in prayer. He cherished our Christmas tradition of passing the candle, with each one saying what they were most thankful for that year. Ed graduated from Holland Christian High School in 1953 and married the love of his life, his "Ruthie" in 1955 and together they had four children. He worked for 43 years as a chemical supervisor and in human resources at Parke-Davis (Warner Lambert). He had an amazing green thumb and grew his own flowers in his greenhouse for over 50 years. His yard was meticulous and even won the Holland Bloomin' Best Front Yard contest one year. He loved to sing and was in many ensembles over the years including the Magnachords, His Men, the Helmsmen Quartet, and Evergreen Chorale. He also sang with church choirs and served as both elder and deacon through the years. He was a member of Central Wesleyan church. Ed served honorably in the Michigan National Guard with one of his calls to duty being the 1956 F5 tornado that ravaged West Michigan. Ed enjoyed golfing, including two holes in one. He was born June 9, 1935 to Alice (Sjoerdsma) and Edward Slenk Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Leah Slenk, and siblings Carolyn Raterink and Alan Slenk. Ed will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Ruth (Dykema) Slenk and their four children, Pat (Chris) deVries, Linda (Jerry) Lanting, Nancy (Terry) Joldersma and Doug (Lori) Slenk; 16 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren whom he loved and adored; brother Howard (Marilyn) Slenk, sister Thelma (Galen) Meyer; brother-in-law Gord Raterink, and sisters-in-law Lorraine Brouwer and Jan Dykema. We would like to thank the caring staff at Vista Springs Holland Meadows and the amazing Spectrum Health Hospice team for their love and care for our husband and dad during his stay there. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 22 at 11:00 am in the chapel of Central Wesleyan church, 446 W. 40th Street, Holland, MI 49423 (entrances D, E, F or G), with visitation prior from 9:00 - 10:30 am. Refreshments will be served immediately following the service. Contributions in his memory may be made to Holland Christian Schools or Zeeland Christian Schools.

To Dr. and Mrs. Slenk (Howard & Marilyn): I just found out that your brother passed away and want to extend my sympathies to both of you. I'm sure you have wonderful memories of time spent with him over the years, probably many of them doing something musical (imagine that!!). It's not easy losing family, but thankfully, we believe that they're not in pain or suffering anymore and are with Jesus, which is where we all hope to be someday. Take care of yourselves and know that many people are thinking of you.

Reflecting on Uncle Ed .. Exodus 15:2. 'The LORD is my strength and my defense; He has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father's God, and I will exalt Him.' Uncle Ed was a pillar of faithfulness and part of God's unfailing love to our family.

So sorry Ruth and family. Ed was a friend and we have many fond memories of traveling with you two. God will hold you close and give you peace, as much as you need. We love you.

Ruth and family,
We express condolences to you but celebrate with Ed and where he is today. We have seen through our growing lives that Ed was a man of character and truly loved the Lord. We also known Ed as a competitor whether on the golf course or sailing competitions on sunfish boat on Big Star Lake. Oh how we looked for Ed’s sail to pop up on the other side of the lake which signaled fun was to be had after a few tacks from each boat. (.never on Sunday in which we could only go up to our knees in the water)
We are most grateful for the rich relationship you had with my Mom, Dad and our family and we will keep you in our prayers.

My first memory of Ed was as one of the guys who hung around my Dad's Kronemeyer Mobile station. Probably 10 years later, The MagnaChords and BelCanto Choirs sang for the Good Friday service at Dimnent. We sang as a mixed chorus and I was privileged to stand and sing next to Ed.
He and Ruth were always a joy to know and be with. Hugs❣❣

My heart goes out to Ed’s family, I’m sorry for the loss of your loved one. Ed will truly be missed. I’m glad I got to meet Ed and some of Ed’s family, his wife (Ruth) and other family members including his daughter Pat. I know it made Ed very happy when his family would come visit him.

May Ed rest in paradise.
