SPECK SR., EDWARD JOHN passed away on January 14, 2026, at the age of 71 after a brief battle with cancer. Beloved husband, father, papa, and brother whose life was marked by deep devotion to family, enduring friendships, and a joyful enthusiasm for living fully. He was known for his quick wit, sharp one-liners, and an uncanny ability to make people laugh. Wherever Ed was, there was warmth, conversation, and often a room full of people.
Ed was the beloved husband of Sue, with whom he shared a life rooted in love, laughter, and togetherness. Together, they were preparing to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this year. He was a loving and devoted father of Edward (Lisa) Speck Jr. and Adam (Steph) Speck, and an adoring Papa to Aria, Benny, Alex, Aiden, and Evie. Few things brought Ed greater joy than time spent with his grandchildren; taking them to sporting events, hosting sleepovers, and creating memories they will treasure forever. Ed took immense pride in watching his sons and grandchildren pursue what they loved; coaching and cheering from the sidelines at sporting events, applauding at dance competitions, and soaking in every moment of their accomplishments with a smile that said it all.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Ed's passion began early. At just 13 years old, he bought his own television so he could watch Hockey Night in Canada, sparking a love for sports that never faded. A huge Detroit sports fan, Ed also loved being active himself. He played pickleball, golf, and racquetball, ran marathons, and believed in staying busy and engaged. He especially loved sharing sports with his sons and grandchildren, passing down his enthusiasm and team loyalty.
Ed was a natural host who loved entertaining. His home was often filled with old and new friends; from school, the cottage, the cigar bar, and everywhere life took him. He enjoyed hosting parties, especially the annual "cousin's party", and lively get-togethers where laughter and storytelling were always abundant. He also enjoyed trips to the casino, spirited debates, and was well known for his skepticism of government, which often led to animated and memorable conversations.
Some of Ed's most cherished moments were spent "up north" at the family cottage in Sunset Shores (Port Austin, Michigan), where he found peace in the simple pleasures of laid-back cottage life. There, he enjoyed time with family, watching sunsets on the beach, sharing cigars with friends, gathering around lively bonfires filled with stories and laughter, playing bags, wagon rides, hosting his annual golf outing, and celebrating his birthday each year surrounded by those he loved most.
He had a remarkable memory for dates and life events, often surprising loved ones with his recall of meaningful moments.
Ed was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mary and Robert Speck, whom he loved deeply and spoke of often. Their values, guidance, and example shaped the man Ed became, and he carried their influence with him throughout his life.
Ed was the dearest brother of Larry Speck, a loving uncle, cousin and a loyal friend to many. His humor, generosity, and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the laughter he created and the love he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation Tuesday from 3–8 PM. Funeral Wednesday 10:00 AM at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile Rd. (Shelby Township).
