Edward Toner Obituary

Edward W. Toner, 81
1943 - 2025
Swampscott, MA - Edward W. "Big Ed" Toner, of Swampscott, MA, passed away surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Reading, Ed graduated from Lynn English High School in 1961 and went on to dedicate his professional life to the students of Lynn Public Schools, where he served as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Ed influenced generations of students across the city, maybe because of his ardent belief that teens deserve second chances rather than punishments.
A member of a football family, he played professionally for the Boston Patriots from 1967 to 1970, while his brother Tom played for the Green Bay Packers and his son, Ed Jr., for the Indianapolis Colts. Ed's love of sports extended far beyond the professional field: he never met a sport he didn't like, and spent decades playing, coaching, refereeing, and shagging balls in parks across the North Shore.
A fun day for Ed was getting out into the community, showing up for a friend, or supporting his favorite candidates and causes. He was recognized as a Laudable Lynner for his contributions to the city and its people, and by the New England Patriots Alumni Association as their very first Volunteer of the Year.
Above all, Ed was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dianne (Cashman) "Cissy" Toner, his daughters Katie Toner Scullion and Elle Toner, his son Edward Toner Jr., and son-in-law Brian Scullion. He was a deeply dedicated father to his eldest son, Billy, who lived at home with him and Dianne until his passing last year. Ed cherished his role as "Gramps" to his grandchildren Jack, Grace, and Jane Scullion, who will forever carry forward his joy, humor, and love.
Ed was the son of the late Joseph and Eleanor (Connelly) Toner. He was predeceased by his brothers Joseph and Tom, and his sister Eleanor. He leaves behind his siblings Paul, Jim, Mark, Bill, and John Toner, and Mary Goldstein, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends who will recall his spirited antics, optimism, and generosity.
Service Information: A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025 in the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean St. (1A), Lynn. After Ed begged to play fullback his senior year agaimst Classical and scored three touchdowns, he told younger brother Mark that now he was a big enough star to ask Cissy Cashman out on a date. Mark told us all the story the following Monday. I don't remember if we were still all at St. Joe's or St. Mary's but Cissy accepted the date and that worked out pretty well. The Cashmans' lived acrosss the street from us and after the marriage, it became the Toner home. I still remember Cissy walking the neighborhood with Billy in the stroller. She was a great mom, just as Ed was a great dad. More importantly, he was a good guy in every sense of the word.

My condolences to Cissy, and the Toner family, especially my old classmates Mark and Paul.
