Dr. Edward Martin Wolfe, 88, of Kirkwood, MO, passed away peacefully at his home and in the arms of family on December 18, 2022.
Ed was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 18, 1934 to Joseph and Hermine (Kornhauser) Wolfe. He was raised in Flatbush (Bedford & Avenue K) with his sister, Jan, attended Brooklyn Technical High School before graduating from Hobart College, and subsequently Washington University Medical School (Class of 1960). It was during his medical training that he met and loved his future wife, Helen Ann Schwarze, whom he married in February of 1962.
In the years that followed, Ed joined the United States Air Force and served as a medical officer in Topeka, KS, attaining the rank of Captain, selecting dermatology as his specialization, and beginning his family with the birth of their daughter, Laura. During his residency in Ann Arbor, MI, came their second daughter, Sarah, and subsequently on their return to St. Louis, MO, Ken and Jennifer soon followed. They would forever be able to find him in a crowd by his whooping laugh that rewarded and gratified anyone who earned it.
In his dermatological practice, Ed soon gained high respect from his patients and colleagues for meticulous care, gentle but precise treatment, and honest, empathetic communication. Throughout his practice, Ed served with distinction as a fellow at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, performing rounds and educating residents. After thirty-six years of serving the people of St. Louis, Ed retired, though he maintained his license and, granted Doctor Emeritus, continued BJC duties for several years thereafter.
Ed and Ann enjoyed a marriage that spanned sixty years. Their home became the seasonal hub for gatherings of their four children and nine grandchildren. Together Ann and Ed traveled the world on multiple and various journeys with close friends, always dutifully accompanied by Ed's medical bag, just in case. Yet, Ed was equally content with antiquing, maintaining their home's English garden, untangling PBS mysteries and crosswords with Ann, and investing time with his small, devoted circle of friends and fellow members of Covenant Presbyterian Church. A long time season ticket holder, Ed was an avid fan of cheering in person for the Cardinals and Muny performances alike, until Ann's death this past August. Most of all, he cherished an O'Connell's burger, cooked very rare, and piled with ketchup.
He will be long-remembered by more people than he would ever concede and loved forever by his family and his friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood, MO 63122.
