Edwin L. Nicholson

Edwin L. Nicholson, age 90, died peacefully on February 10, 2021 at his home in Springfield, PA. Ed was born in 1930 to Jacob E. and Gladys (Trimble) Nicholson in West Alexander, PA. He graduated from Triadelphia High School in Wheeling, WV in 1948 and received his degree in Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1953, where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and then worked as an engineer in various capacities for 40 years before retiring in 1995. Ed shared 50 years of marriage with Virginia (Smith) before her death in 2005. He is survived by children Barbara Nicholson and her husband Mitch Thompson, John Nicholson and his wife Chris Shenot, Lisa Nicholson and her husband Steve Greulich, and Bit Holt and her husband Charlie, as well as grandchildren Corinne, Nathan, Marie, Katy, Lee, John, Shannon and Owen. He also leaves behind his companion of 10 years, Mary Ann Davis. Ed was proud of his family connections to Penn State, including his wife Virginia as well as her parents and sisters, all four of his children and four of his grandchildren, spanning 4 generations over 100 years. He was partial to beagles, was never mistaken for Beau Brummell, and probably enjoyed the Jersey Shore more than anyone raised in the mountains of West Virginia. He was a hardworking, honorable man who loved and took care of his family. His children were blessed to have grown up steeped in sarcasm, pranks, and so-so poetic ditties. He was the guiding force behind the term "Nicholsoning", which, loosely translated, means the very shortest possible distance between two points, although not necessarily the simplest. The family requests that you raise a tumbler sized Manhattan in Ed's memory.
