Edwin W. (Ed) Pasternak

SALEM – Mr. Edwin Walter (Ed) Pasternak, 92, died peacefully at home on Monday, January 30, 2017. Ed is survived by his son, Robert E. (Bob) Pasternak, and his wife, Bernice A. (Bunnie) Pasternak, his daughter, Nancy A. McCarthy, and his beloved, only grandson, CJ McCarthy, and his wife, Jenny McCarthy. Ed's wife, Catherine A. (Kay) (Williams) Pasternak, pre-deceased him in January 2015, after 66 years of marriage. Ed graduated from Salem High School with the Class of 1941. An honorably discharged veteran, Ed served in Europe with the 6th Armored Division of the United States Army during World War II. He joined the Service in Boston, MA, along with many of his classmates. Upon his return after his service, Ed worked at a variety of jobs before joining the Salem School Department where he worked at the Sheridan, Saltonstall, and Carlton schools for over 25 years before retiring in 1987 and he was always known as "Mr. Ed" to the students. Ed was a devoted gardener, weather observer, and bird watcher, who would often spend time with his grandson, CJ, in the yard where many 4th of July family celebrations took place. Ed also loved traveling with Kay over the years, where they spent time at the beaches of Cape Cod and St. Thomas, USVI with family and friends, seeing the sites of Hawaii for their 25th anniversary, traveling throughout the United States to include Alaska, and other countries in Europe and Great Britain. ARRANGEMENTS: Assisting the family with arrangements is The O'Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) Salem. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
