Elaine Kihen Calvin, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 5, 2026, at the age of 92. She lived a life of quiet purpose and was known for her selfless spirit, her generosity and dedication to others.
A Detroit native, Elaine graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Education and went on to teach elementary and special needs students, and carried that commitment to learning throughout her life.
Family was the center of her world. She is survived by her three children — Ruth, John (Sandy), and Mark (Jennifer) — and six grandchildren: Ben (Scharf), Emily, John III, Megan, Kaitlyn and Mark Jr. She loved taking them to the zoo, cheering them on at their sporting events, and sharing her passion for learning.
Elaine loved the outdoors — watching birds and her favorite monarch butterflies, gardening, and observing wildlife (especially raccoons). An avid tennis player, she brought that same competitive spirit to cheering for the Michigan Wolverines and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
For the last 20 years, Elaine’s passion was translating books from English into Braille, and devoted countless volunteer hours daily, giving many the gift of sight. It was often said that there is a special place in heaven for Elaine. She will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 20, at 10:30 am at Ponte Vedra Presbyterian Church in Ponte Vedra Beach.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in Elaine’s memory to the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind or the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.
