Elayne Shackleton Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 2, 2023.
Shackleton (Hengle), Elayne
Mrs. Elayne Moss Shackleton, loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt and caring dog mom was welcomed into heaven on October 26th, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents Louis A. and Beulah M. (Gadson) Hengle; her first husband, Herman Moss; her second husband, John (Jack) Shackleton; brother in-law Patrick Kelley and nephew Shane DeVries. Elayne is survived by her sister, Sherrie DeVries (Gary Chisolm); nieces and nephews Sean (Lisa) Kelley, Erin (Juan) Jimenez, Shea (Jack) Miller and Shad Devries along with 7 great nieces and nephews. She was born on May 23, 1922 in Marshfield, Wisconsin.
Elayne grew up in Marshfield and following high school she moved to New York to pursue a modeling career. She had a style and eloquent grace that all adored. She met her first husband, Herman Moss, in Wisconsin while he attended Marquette University in Milwaukee. He was a doctor for the Navy and they moved often. They eventually settled in Jacksonville, Florida where they designed and built the home that Elayne would live in for the rest of her life. Elayne's parents and her younger sister, Sherrie, had also moved from Marshfield to Jacksonville to run an ice cream shop called The Dreamette. Elayne lost her first husband at a young age and later met and married Jack Shackleton. Elayne and Jack loved to travel. They traveled to places all over the world; Asia, Africa, India, Brazil and Australia just to name a few.
Elayne was a wealth of knowledge and her cultural experiences were always fascinating to hear about. She had a witty sense of humor and wasn't afraid to say what was on her mind. She lost Jack in 1988 and did not remarry. Elayne loved dogs. She had many Standard Poodles through the years and she treated them like royalty. They were beautifully groomed and often had painted nails and bows in their hair. They were her companions in her later years and gave her much joy as she struggled with Alzheimer's disease. They were by her side morning, noon and night. Elayne will be missed by her family, caretakers and all that knew her. Special thanks to Todd, Carolyn and the rest of her caretakers for all they did to care for Elayne. A private burial will be held, Elayne will be laid to rest in Jacksonville Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to in her honor to the Orange Park Humane Society.
