As I reflect on the departing of Doña Elba, it is inevitable, but to remember, the goodness of her heart in all that she did to provide, love and care to her family. She extended that same love and care to my family as if I was her own daughter. I remember during graduations and festivities, she would cook one of my favorite rice dishes and later thought me how to cook it! She would care for my children as if they were her own grandchildren. Doña Elba took pride in her family and those near to them became dear to her heart. Beautiful memories and a strong legacy has been left behind to those who met Doña Elba, a simple and pure heart, "The Love for Family".
My love is with you, "The Herrera Family", during these difficult times of mourning, but be proud in knowing that while she was on earth, you gave her all the love she deserved to have. I love you much, my dear sister Laura, my heart is with you!

Mami hoy será nuestra última despedida hasta que nos volvamos a ver. El dolor y el vacío me abruman, a la vez me siento conforme y agradecida, ya que tuve la dicha y bendición de tenerte a ti como madre. Te vi luchar y lograr todas tus metas porque nunca te dabas por vencida, también pude ver como nada era imposible para ti. Que muchos sacrificios hiciste, pero tenias tus sueños claros. Que lindo fue verte como hija con mi abuelo y mi abuela, como hermana con mis tias y tio, como madre, como tía de mis primos, como abuela, como bisabuela en fin tenías el don de un ser muy especial.
Mami, crecí con tu apoyo constante, siempre dándome ánimo a que siguiera adelante. Hoy mis logros te lo debo a ti. Creaste para mi varios tesoros, el principal mis hermanos, no se que me haría sin ellos. Gracias mamá. Que gran orgullo me da poder decir que eres mi madre. Ya me haces falta.
Eras el imán de nuestra familia, tu hogar estuvo acto para reunirnos y crear las gratas memorias en armonía, no importaba la hora ni el día, tus puertas siempre estaban abiertas. Tu hospitalidad salía a relucir en todo momento.

With Elba's passing a very complex history of love and travails left us hungry to be told. It is indeed our loss! Elba woke every single day of her live to counsel, console and to sacrifice all she had to help those in need out of the goodness of her hear; without expecting anything in return. Some even refused to see the light. Elba was the perfect example of the matriarch. She feared not. Many embraced her goodness and dedication not really understanding the depth and the intensity behind the woman. When she left, all of us lost much more than we knew we had. After more than 50-years, I was most impacted by Elba's day by day tenacity and heart of gold while fiercely protecting her family and those who knocked at her door seeking refuge. She never denied harbor to those who came to her for help and she imposed no conditions in return. She gave it all! Elba's undying quest and determination to give anyone a helping hand was unparalleled. I cannot think of anyone else with the same determination and conviction for the people who sought her help. It is a great loss indeed. If we had only taken more time to listen to what she had to teach us, today we would be better people. Now is the time to mediate and to come to terms with the reality of what we had and is no longer here. When we add it all up, we will unquestionably reach the same conclusionWe all lost more than we could afford. I only hope that one day we will meet again and then I will pay more attention. The greatest grandma my children could have. Always put her grandchildren first, she was a caring loving and giving grandma. My children were the lucky ones to have such a fabulous grandma. As I prepare myself to say goodbye to my mother tomorrow, I recall our times together when I was a little girl. As a child, my mother took me everywhere even when I did not want to go with her. She taught me to be strong, never to give up, and to always have empathy for others. My mother was always working outside in the garden and enjoying the little things, and she did not care to go out to fancy restaurants or vacations. My mother enjoyed cooking for the family and baking all different kinds of desserts. She contributed to the upbringing of her grandkids and she pushed each one of them to get a college degree. She used to tell me how proud she was of each one of her grandkids. My mother was a champion, a fighter, and determined individual. I will miss her every day. Until we meet again, mom.

Manny and family so very sorry for your loss. Your mom was a wonderful woman and I'm very glad I had the opportunity to meet her. May she RIP. My deepest condolences and sympathies to all of you. ❤❤

Elba was a student in my ESL class at Plumley Village approximately 40 years ago. She was a very special generous and kind woman, and I adored her. She would tell about how she and her husband had a restaurant in Cuba, and how she loved to cook. My fondest memories were of the times she surprised the class with a beautiful lunch served on China tableware with a lovely tablecloth. The food was sabroso' and the students had a ball. Elba knew how to bring people together. She left a lasting impression on me.
