Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sims Funeral Services on Mar. 4, 2026.
With deep love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of an extraordinary woman whose unwavering presence and faithful devotion to God nurtured a harmonious spirit that touched all who knew her. Eleanor Frances White Dunn of
Harrodsburg, Kentucky, was surrounded by her loving family as she passed peacefully at Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville, Kentucky, March 1, 2026, at the age of 91.
Born on November 9, 1934, in
Burgin, Kentucky, to Alvis and Goldie White, Eleanor entered this world with a humble servant's heart. During her youth, she lovingly helped her family raise her younger siblings, demonstrating early the compassion and strength that would define her life. She gave her life to Christ at a young age at Little Zion Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in many capacities, including Vacation Bible School teacher, choir member, and dedicated volunteer.
Eleanor attended West Side School, an all-Black school, where she excelled academically. After graduating, she traveled to New York with her sister Arnetta and was employed at Jordan Marsh Department Store (now Macy's). Upon returning to Kentucky, she worked as a traveling caregiver, continuing her lifelong calling to care for others.
On June 6, 1956, Eleanor married Walter Dunn in Danville, Kentucky, officiated by Reverend O'Neil. Together, they built a loving home and raised 11 children, pouring into them wisdom, faith, knowledge, and the enduring love of God. She was deeply committed to her family and embodied the virtues of a Proverbs 31 woman-strength, honor, compassion, and unwavering faith. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment spent with them and taking great pride in the generations that followed her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Dunn Sr., and her children, Phyllis Walker and Glenn Dunn.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her children: her sons, Larry Gayton and Vanessa of
Harrodsburg, Kentucky; Walter Dunn Jr. of Lexington, Kentucky; Timothy Dunn of Lexington, Kentucky; Charles Dunn and Trish of Woodstock, Georgia; Jonathan and LaCher of Corinth, Mississippi; and Jason and Susan of Lexington, Kentucky; and her daughters, Leisha Carr and William of Bowling Green, Kentucky; and Marita Dunn and Michelle Dunn, both of
Harrodsburg, Kentucky; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends.
She is also survived by her siblings: Anna Parks, Jane James "Poochie," Jacquelen White, Charles White, and Alvin White (Anna). She was preceded in death by her siblings: Arnetta White, Shirley Akiwowo, and Ruby Dunn.
Throughout her life, Eleanor was known for her strong work ethic and dedication. She worked as a CNA for Caretenders, served as a cook at Shaker Village, and worked as a tax preparer for H&R Block. She also completed temporary assignments for Hitachi and the University of Kentucky, where she cared for the children of professors. In addition, she faithfully served her community through her work with the Unemployment Office in Harrodsburg, no matter the role, Eleanor carried herself with dignity, integrity, and excellence.
Eleanor's love for her community was evident in countless ways. She once opened her home in Burgin as a clinic so neighborhood children could receive vaccinations. She was a gifted cook and baker, famous for her Derby Pie and other cherished desserts, winning several blue ribbons at the Mercer County Fair. She had a special love for flowers and created a beautiful garden at her church in honor of her mother. A devoted daughter, she helped her mother clean the church and later took on those responsibilities herself-always remembering to keep the pastor's candy jar full.
We leave you with a cherished quote from Eleanor's journals and devotionals: "The more you celebrate your life, the more you can celebrate. I don't want to grow so old and look back on my life and see I have not celebrated my life-this is it on this Earth. Be thankful to our Heavenly Father and live the best you can and help others along the way. But don't forget God and yourself. You need God in this life and after you have lived this life."
Her life was a testament to faith, service, love, and celebration. Her legacy lives on through the love, light, and compassion she instilled in all who knew her, leaving a lasting and eternal impact. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
