Eleanor Schwan
March 1, 1928 - November 21, 2025
Eleanor I. Schwan was born on March 1, 1928, in Daykin, NE, to Ben & Emma Marschman, and she passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, at the age of 97.
She was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Daykin and later confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church on June 21, 1942. Eleanor graduated from Daykin High School in 1945. She was united in marriage to William Schwan on August 24, 1947, at St. John Lutheran Church in Daykin. To this union four children were born. She and Bill lived on the family farm until 1960, when they moved to DeWitt.
Eleanor was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in DeWitt. She was a loving mother and was always ready to help out as a grandma with her grandkids and great grandkids. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's school and sporting events for as long as her health allowed. Eleanor had a great sense of humor and a ready smile. She was a fan of the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed quilting. She was a friend to many in her community and will be remembered as the lady who gave out homemade popcorn balls on Halloween for over 50 years to trick-or-treaters, young and old.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; daughter, Linda Hyberger and son-in-law, Mark Hyberger; and great-grandson, Emmett Baker. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ed, Loren, Elmer, and Melvin Marschman; and her sisters, Ida Schwisow, Minnie Scheele, Ella Jordening, Helen Jordening, Velma Hohensee, Edna Jordening, Doris Kugel, and Darlene Schweer.
Eleanor is survived by her sons, Bob Schwan and wife, Deb of DeWitt, Bill Schwan and wife, Chris of DeWitt, and Doug Schwan and wife, Sheri of Phoenix, AZ; her grandchildren, Troy Hyberger and wife, Dee Dee, Bobbie Scherling and husband, Brian, Jamie Beerenstrauch and Jarod Pieper, Lindsey Hofstetter and husband, Brandon; Heather Baker and husband, Dillon; great-grandchildren, Gage and Madison Hyberger, Karli, Kenzi and Kaylin Scherling, Rylan and Bryson Beerenstrauch, Grayson Pieper; Micah and Lennon Hofstetter, and William and Blair Baker.
Public visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in DeWitt with the family greeting friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Her funeral services will follow at the church at 10:30 a.m. and will be livestreamed by the church. Interment will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in DeWitt. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. Friday at the church. A memorial has been established to the family's choice for future designation with the funeral home in charge.
