Elease Morgan Obituary

Augusta, GA – Mrs. Elease McGowan Morgan entered into rest on Sunday, February 15, 2026. She was the adored wife of the late Dan B. Morgan for 63 years. Elease was born in Augusta, Georgia on June 12, 1924, the first of Joseph and Bertha Powell McGowan's seven children. Shortly after graduating from Tubman High School, she met her future husband, Dan, while out with friends on Broad Street. He said he was struck by her beauty that day and every day afterwards. After they married in 1944, they welcomed a son and a daughter and built a home in the Brynwood neighborhood where she lived for the next 60 years until moving to Brandon Wilde. In addition to her work as a homemaker, she worked at the Augusta College Bookstore until her retirement. Elease was a superb cook, winning praise from her family at every meal. She sewed and smocked countless beautiful dresses for her daughter and granddaughters and enjoyed working in her garden. She volunteered at University Hospital for many years and the time spent rocking babies in the neonatal unit was most precious to her. She also crocheted lap robes for hospital patients, something she continued doing until her final days. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for 62 years, worshiping and serving Christ with many dear friends. Elease was humble, kind and truly had a servant's heart. Elease is survived by her son, Glenn Morgan and wife Amy of Birmingham, Ala.; and daughter, Jane Roupe of Evans, Ga.; five grandchildren, Jonathan Morgan (Meagan) of Tampa, Fla., Lauren Kopecky (Andrew) of Huntsville, Ala., Brittany Whatley (Tripp) of Charleston, S.C., Sara Jane Charles of Chicago, Ill., and Susannah Prince (Victor) of Atlanta, Ga.; four great-granddaughters, Molly Morgan, Mary Morgan Kopecky, Katherine Kopecky, and Julia Charles; and five siblings, Martha Tudor of Augusta, Ga., Joseph McGowan, Jr. Bill McGowan (Linda), all of Evans, Ga, Leon McGowan, of Suwanee, Ga., and Carl McGowan of Sylvania, Ga., as well as countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Dan, her parents, her sister Catherine Rueseler, special sister-in-law Jeannie McGowan, and son-in-law Charlie Roupe. The family would like to thank the staff of Brandon Wilde who treated her with such care during her final years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, the Rev. Dr. Scott Pickering officiating. Visitation and reception will immediately follow the service. If so desired, memorials may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 3185 Wheeler Road, Augusta, Georgia 30909 (aldersgateum.com).

I always loved being around Aunt Elease. She had that wonderful calm spirit but her humor and intelligence shone through. I was so happy when she moved to Brandon Wilde so I could visit her everytime I visited my parents.... Her brother and sister in love. When I walked into her apartment she was usually sitting in her chair so she could see her birds and have good light to read and do her puzzles by. She made me feel so special. No doubt she was crazy about her family. One of my last memories of her was holding her latest great grand baby and how much joy that gave her. AND I cherish her "interviews" that my brother recorded. Her advice? Don´t worry, don´t compare and eat chocolate!

I knew Miss Elease from her volunteering at University Hospital in the Nicu, I am a retired nurse from there and was always glad to see Miss Elease walk in to rock a baby or help put linings out for the nurses to use, she was always helpful. I am so sorry for your loss she often spoke of her grandkids

I was never privileged to know Elease, but I have had several occasions to speak with her daughter, Jane. What a wonderful woman and mother she must have been, and I know she will be sorely missed. I will be praying for her Jane and the many family members in the days ahead, that they might know Christ and his comfort.
