Obituary of Electa Dumlao Zabat-Hamad

Electa "Ellie" Zabat-Hamad

We are heartbroken to share that our mom Dr. Electa "Ellie" Zabat-Hamad passed away on December 13, 2025. Ellie was born in Manila, Philippines on September 5, 1935, the third among four children of Dr. Jose Zabat and Pilar Dumlao Zabat. As children, she, her brother, and her sisters endured the hardships of World War II.

Born to a nurse and physician, she chose medicine as her calling, largely influenced by her father's devotion to his patients. She graduated valedictorian from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine where she met her medical school classmate and future husband, Dr. Delfin P. Hamad. In 1960, Ellie made the brave decision to relocate to the United States with several classmates in pursuit of new opportunities. She completed a pediatrics residency at Griffin Hospital in CT. Following a move to New York, she and Delfin reconnected and married in 1965. They initially settled in Jamaica, Queens before moving into their forever home in Garden City, Long Island.

Ellie instilled a love of music, musical theatre, Manhattan, and world travel in her daughters. She was an antique collector and an aficionado of horror movies. Ellie was a voracious reader and poet whose attire, makeup, and jewelry were always impeccably coordinated. Spritely and skilled with words, she could charm you in any conversation and loved to laugh.

Ellie was the beacon and hub of the family. She was a loving mother to three, grandmother to five children and two dogs and a bonus grandma to three boys. There are no words to express our grief but we take comfort to know that her passage was peaceful and painless. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Ellie is survived by her husband Dr. Delfin P. Hamad; her sister, Pilarcita Abad (Zabat); her daughters Giselle Hamad, Kimberly Hamad-Schifferli, and Alyssandrea "Sandi" Hamad-Ebrahimpour; her sons-in-law Mark Schifferli and Arman Ebrahimpour, and her grandchildren Nico and Sofi Clavijo, Aurora and Tobie Schifferli, and Zoe Ebrahimpour.

A private graveside burial will take place. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to spend a moment with or thinking about your mother.
