Elenora Davies Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home on Dec. 6, 2025.
Mrs. Elenora Davies, 86, formerly of Shrewsbury passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Dodge Park Rest Home in Worcester, MA.

Her husband of 46 years, John A. Davies, passed away on July 12, 2010. She leaves her son, Matthew Davies and wife, Colleen of Charlotte, NC; her daughter, Janis Bliss and husband, Daniel of Dudley, MA; her grandsons, Maxwell Davies of Cullowhee, NC, and Marcus Davies of Halfway, OR, to whom she was affectionately known as G-Ma. She also leaves her nephew, Matthew Theodores and wife Ellen of Cumberland Foreside, ME, niece, Denise Theodores and husband Andrew Rodwin of Acton, MA, and niece Jackie Theodores. She was pre-deceased by her two brothers Ted Theodores and Louis Theodores and nephew Bruce Theodores.

Elenora, or El as she was often called, was born in 1939 in Webster, MA, to the late Peter and Francine Theodores. As recent immigrants to the United States, the family lived with three generations in the same house on West Street, in the Jericho section of Dudley, until El was 2 years old. In 1941, they moved to a house they built on Mason Road where her parents lived the remainder of their lives. Elenora was a high achieving student from her early childhood. She was particularly fond of remembering that she was 7th grade class President, and that she won back-to-back spelling competitions in the 8th and 9th grades. She also always showed talent in art and music throughout her life.

Her early academic success persisted. She was one of the first female graduates of the Physics program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, graduating with BS in Physics and a minor in Mathematics in 1961. Elenora worked at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey in the summer of 1960, where she witnessed the launch of the Earth-transmitting satellite Echo 1, a breakthrough development in satellite communications. After graduating, she worked as a Physicist at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory (NOL) in Maryland from 1961-1963. While at NOL, she saw John F. Kennedy give a speech on the South Lawn of the White House and later experienced the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and attended the funeral of JFK in 1963. While on a visit to the computer programming lab at NOL, El met 1st Lieutenant John Davies of the United States Air Force. The two were married on December 21, 1963, and they moved to Worcester, MA, where John had accepted a position as a Physics Professor at Clark University. They then started a family and eventually moved to Shrewsbury. Elenora stayed home to take care of their two children Matt (born in 1966) and Janis (born in 1969). While taking care of two young children, Elenora's academic mind was never idle. She became certified in Braille by the Library of Congress and spent 10 years translating many books for the Perkins Institute in Boston, MA, so that they could be read by the blind. She also ran the office for the family business, Quality Dyers in Webster.

In 1978, Elenora decided to return to school for a master's degree at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, but she was not sure what she wanted to study. In one of his typical, but genius, understatements, John said "El, I think you should study computer science. I think it might be going somewhere." And it did "go somewhere". Elenora graduated with an MS in Computer Science in 1984. This led to a very successful career. She worked at Paul Revere Insurance Company in Worcester, MA, for 17 years working her way up to be an Executive Systems Consultant. She then worked as a Senior Information Analyst for 7 years at National Grid in Westboro, MA, retiring in 2005.

After her retirement, she was very active, taking pride in landscaping her yard. "G-Ma" also spent several years traveling from Massachusetts to North Carolina to help take care of her two young grandchildren Max and Marcus. She spent the first year of their lives with them so that they did not have to start day care until they were a year old. She also enjoyed spending time with her whole family at Kiawah Island, SC.

Elenora … El … Ellie … G-Ma … was best characterized by her incredibly generous nature, her intelligence, quick humor, and her inexhaustible willingness to help. She will be sorely missed by her loving family and by the many whose lives she touched.

The family would like to thank Dodge Park Rest Home for their compassionate care.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Elenora's family on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 12 NOON at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury followed by a service celebrating and honoring her life at 12:00 PM. She will be buried next to her husband in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
