Mr. Elgin Rogers, Sr.
March 15, 1940 – February 12, 2026
Mr. Elgin Rogers was born to Richard and Jeannette Rogers of
Camilla, Georgia (incorporated Greenough Community). He was the second oldest son out of the twelve children. Elgin accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at an early age at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in
Camilla, Georgia. Elgin attended David Vester Elementary School in Sale City, Georgia and High School at Camilla Consolidated in
Camilla, Georgia. Where he played basketball and was a talented and gifted athlete.
At the age of 16 years old Elgin moved to
Toledo, Ohio with his oldest sister Jean. Upon arriving in Toledo, he worked several manufacturing jobs and purchased a brand-new convertible Ford mustang. The purchase made him the talk of the town. He was affectionately known as "Mustang" by those who knew him. Mr. Rogers worked in manufacturing at Robert's Rubbers and several union shops before working at Vulcan Industries. At Vulcan, he was known as a reliable and dedicated skilled worker. He ran several lines that provided support for military vehicles. He was well liked and respected by management and his coworkers. He appeared in several company commercials. When Vulcan Industries closed – he decided to go into business for himself. He taught his children and all that worked for him to "get a skill and be your own boss." He is known across the region for his expertise in remodeling homes and repairing any and everything that has to do with a house.
Mr. Rogers believed in hard work and believed in helping others. When completing the work, he was hired to do and he was asked…. "How much do I owe you – he would often say one of the following: whatever, you give me…. or whatever you think is fair." Mr. Rogers trained and gave many children, men, and women an opportunity to learn the trades and earn a dollar. If you wanted to work – he would give you an opportunity. He did not care about your background or circumstance, but you could not be dishonest nor disrespectful.
Mr. Rogers was known for being on the move either in his truck or car but he was committed to his craft. Although his claim to fame was working on houses - he was better known for being Uncle Elgin and Daddy. He instilled in his daughter and sons the importance of education and graduating from high school and making something of themselves.
Mr. Rogers was the sole caretaker of his late wife Vivian. He made sure that she was well taken care of after experiencing a stroke from which she did not fully recover. He refused to send her to a nursing facility for long term care.
Mr. Rogers is preceded in death by wife Vivian; daughter Shelly, sisters Jennie V. Pegues (Jean), Ginger Guyton, Pastor Corine Small, Edith Bennett; Mamie and brothers Andrew (AJ), and General Dillard Rogers.
Mr. Elgin Rogers, Sr. leaves to cherish his memory three sons: Reggie (Tabitha), Representative Elgin, Jr., and Orlando of Toledo. Sisters: Mildred, Rosie Lee; of Georgia; Brothers: Millard, and Raymond; Nine grandchildren (Four boys and Four Girls), Fourteen great grandchildren, countless nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and family.
Mr. Rogers was a great man who loved his family, community, and believed in helping people. For him hard work was necessary and it was not an option. He was a man of faith- "he was heard saying thank God for Jesus!
