Elijah Kindred Jr. (Earl)
Born on July 4, 1938, to Elijah Kindred Sr. and Allie Mae Kindred, Elijah was from a large family. He attended the Birmingham School District before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1955. Serving as a Machinist Mate for 26 years, including service during the Vietnam War, he retired in 1980 as a Master Chief E9 .
Elijah had two sons from a previous marriage, Amir (Ronald) and Privot Kindred. He later remarried Pirle Mae Anderson in 1967, and together they welcomed two more children: Vernon and April Kindred. A strong advocate for education, Elijah believed in its power as a source of empowerment. After retiring from the Navy, he spent 13 years working in building maintenance and HVAC at the University of California, San Diego, retiring for the second time in 1993.
At the age of 60, Elijah returned to education to obtain his teaching credentials. In 1995, he became a Vocational Instructor in HVAC for the Department of Corrections, retiring in 2003.
Family-oriented and deeply supportive, Elijah attended numerous games and ceremonies, enjoying quality time with his loved ones. Known for his humor, he was also a passionate sports fan, particularly of the Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Raiders, and Las Vegas Raiders. His favorite chant, "Just Win Baby," exemplified his unwavering loyalty as a true fan.
Elijah will be profoundly missed. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pirle Mae Kindred; sons Amir Kindred, Privot Kindred; daughter-in-love Cheryl Kindred and Vernon Kindred; daughter-in-love Crystal Kindred; and daughter April Kindred; son-in-love Moosun Ra-El (Jeffery). He leaves behind fourteen grandchildren: Lamone Kindred, (granddaughter-in-love) Sabil Kindred, Kara Liu (grandson-in-love), Kevin Liu, Zaakiyha McFail (grandson-in-love), Luther McFail, Tiana Smith (grandson-in-love), Michael Smith, Jennifer Kindred, Gabriel Kindred, Kayla Kindred, Zarriah Kindred, Malik Kindred, Vaneccia Netters, and Lilah Kindred, Erykah Kindred, Nevaeh Kindred and Josiah Kindred as well as fourteen great-grandchildren: Creshawn J. Robertson, Kaiya Liu, Carmyn Kindred, Camarah Kindred, Logan Kindred, Zayden McFail, Zayn McFail, Zaylen McFail, Michael Smith, Makai Smith, Mosiah Smith, Amina Smith, Amaya Smith, and Nasir Smith. And Godson Dwayne Elliott.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Allie Mae Kindred; two great-grandchildren, De'Adre LaMone Kindred and Marcellus Hudson Netters; and siblings Tassie (Sweet), Lula (Dosie), Cassie (Doll), Tina, Leon (Mamie Warren), Mandy, Cora Lee, Lethia Mae, and Margaret. Surviving siblings include Geraldine Pearson, Teresa Wilkins, Eddie (Jackie) Kindred, Linda (Charles) Jones, Elaine (Robert) Dennis, Leslie (Lucille) Parker, Janet (K.C.) King, and Tonya (Barron) Guthrie, all of Birmingham, Alabama, along with numerous nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.
