Elizabeth (Betty) Jean Adams passed away quietly in her sleep, surrounded by family, on Wednesday morning, November 26th.
Betty was born in Kelly Station, Pennsylvania in 1938. She was the middle of 5 children and would often attribute her passive personality to being smack in the middle.
Her first job was as a long distance telephone switchboard operator, and she thought Lily Tomlin’s switchboard skits on Laugh-In were hilarious.
Betty was a talented sketch artist, and encouraged her daughters to pursue their creativity. Even letting them paint pictures on their bedroom walls as teenagers.
She believed in constant learning and saved for a set of Encyclopedia Brittanica while her children were still in elementary school. No easy feat on a wage working in the mushroom mines.
In 1976, Betty came to Utah to pick up her oldest daughter from BYU. She fell in love with the mountains and the people, and soon moved her small family to Orem.
Betty’s passion was genealogy. Once when her mother came to visit, they spent a full day at the Genealogy library in Salt Lake looking up lost relatives on microfiche. Betty was inspired by her mother’s excitement when they finally located a single name. The hunt was on for more names, more connections, more stories.
Betty is preceded in death by Richard Kunkle (brother), Joanne Cramer (sister), and Patricia Toy (sister).
She is survived by MaryAnne Howard (sister), Deborah Dean (daughter), Pamela Flynn (daughter), 6 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
