Elizabeth Carotenuto Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Riverview Funeral Home - Shelton on Dec. 30, 2025.
It is with heavy sadness that we share Elizabeth (Betty) Carotenuto passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28th, 2025, after a long journey with dementia at Gardner Heights Nursing Home in Shelton.

Elizabeth was born on July 30, 1937 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport to the late Edward and Marie Sutherland. She attended Harding High School in Bridgeport and later pursued an education in data entry, medical transcribing, and typing.

Betty's passion in life was truly being with family and friends and the search of the ultimate good time. Wherever Betty was, a glass of wine wasn't far behind.

Betty loved to dance and exercise, she loved music, and was an avid walker. She loved the great outdoors and enjoyed horseback riding and boating. But Betty's true love was being with her three grandchildren, Mark, Alex, and Casey, whenever she could.

Betty had a strong love for her husband Frank Carotenuto, with whom she helped run his family business, The Rose Flower Shop in Derby. After his passing Betty moved to be with some of her closest friends, living in both Tampa, FL, and Merced, CA, before returning home to Shelton for her retirement.

Betty held many professions in her life, sometimes working two at a time, including secretary for Hewitt Memorial Hospital in Shelton, data entry for Better Packages in Shelton, property management for Waterwheel Apartments in Shelton, and ultimately becoming a medical transcriptionist for Dr. Fromm (Fairfield Neurology) and Dr. Russo (Advanced Radiology).

Whether you knew her as Mom, Elizabeth, Betty, Bett, Betty Boop, or Boopster, her energy and endless laughter will sadly be missed forever.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her late husband Frank Carotenuto and brother Edward Sutherland.

She is survived by her loving son Mark Carotenuto and his wife Lori of Shelton, three grandchildren, Mark Carotenuto of Shelton, Alex Carotenuto of Shelton, and Casey Demeis and her husband Alex of Shelton, and her sister-in-law Anita Glover and daughter Holly Wasilewski. She also leaves behind close friends Patricia and Ann Marie Rappa, Rose and Ralph Zullo, Barbara, Margie, and Nana, along with several other dear friends, nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Whitney Carter and her staff at Gardner Heights Nursing Home in Shelton for taking excellent care of Mom.

Friends are invited to greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, on Saturday, January 3, 2026, from 9 to 10:30 AM. Her funeral service will begin in the parlor at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Mt. St. Peter's Cemetery in Derby. Online condolences can be extended at www.riverviewfh.com.
