Elizabeth "Betty" Fryc, 99+ years old, peacefully passed away on October 18, 2024 in Stuart, Florida surrounded by family.
Betty was born on March 20, 1925 in
Amsterdam, NY. She was the daughter of Catherine (Dybas) & Aloysius Syzdek. She graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1943 with honors. On August 15,1942 she married Ralph Fryc, celebrating 46 years together before his passing in 1989. She lived in their home for 50+ years on Grove Street in Amsterdam.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and returned annually to enjoy pierogis and see old friends at the Polish festival. Betty was a member of the Pierogi Angels and the Ladies Rosary Society for 70 years. She was a Hospice volunteer for over 20 years, where she received many awards for her service.
While raising her family, she worked as a seamstress at Martin Jay Dress Factory. After her children graduated from school, she was employed by the New York State Department of Tax and Finance. After retiring, Betty enjoyed quality time, traveling and visiting family and friends.
Betty's love of travel took her to 39 U.S. states and 7 other countries. She especially enjoyed seeing the Eiffel Tower in France and the salt mines during a visit to Poland. She also enjoyed baseball, regularly attending Amsterdam Mohawk games as recently as last summer.
Betty enjoyed playing games at the Inman Senior Center in Amsterdam before wintering in VistaPines in Stuart, FL, and then relocating to Brookdale Senior Living in Jensen Beach, FL. She loved crafting and gardening, and would regularly be found winning games of Rummikub, Phase 10, and Mahjong. Her spirit and memories will be kept alive by her family through cooking and eating her favorite dishes: nalesniki, golumbki, babka, and wacky cake.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother, Anton Syzdek, her sister Eleanor Keehan, and her sons-in-law Ron Kormanek, Jim Cole, and Ray Miller.
Betty is survived by her children, Sue Kormanek (Bill Tuggle), Palm City, FL; Marge Cole, Stuart, FL; Greg (Carol), Niskayuna, NY; Theresa Miller, Binghamton, NY; and Bob (Sue), Port St. Lucie, FL; her brothers, Larry Syzdek (Ruth), Clifton Park, NY; and Chet Syzdek (Carolyn), Spartanburg, SC; along with 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Betty will be remembered for her cheerfulness, compassion, friendliness as well as her stunning white hair. We will all miss her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 11a.m. at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church with the Very Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis E.V. as celebrant. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday, October 28, 2024 from 4p.m. until 6p.m. at the Rose & Hughes Funeral Home, 200 Church Street,
Amsterdam, NY 12010. The Rosary Society of St. Stanislaus will gather at 3:45p.m. at the funeral home.
