Elizabeth A. "Betty" Tomczyk (Whalen), age 88, from
Springfield, PA passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026 with family by her side. She was the daughter of the late John E. and Helen (Gormley) Whalen of
Clifton Heights, PA.
Betty was a 1955 graduate of Notre Dame High School in Moylan, PA. Upon graduation, she worked as a secretary for the vice president of Provident Mutual Insurance Company through 1962.
During high school, Betty met the love of her life, Paul Tomczyk. They were married in 1960 and were blessed to have each other for 57 beautiful years. In 1962, they started their family, and Betty began her role as a stay-at-home mom for the next 21 years to raise their two daughters. During those years, she was actively involved in her daughters' lives, taking on new interests in things like homeroom mom, Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader, cookie mom, class trip parent, and swim team meet scorer. She rarely missed a swim meet, basketball game, volleyball game, softball game, or school play. She would volunteer to help with anything and everything whenever needed.
At the age of 46, after the girls were grown, she went back into the workforce to begin her career as a customer service representative for Beneficial Savings Bank. Admirably, she worked at Beneficial for the next 27 years, where she made an incredible number of friends that she stayed connected with throughout her life.
She was an active member of Holy Cross Parish in
Springfield, PA for more than 60 years. In addition, she was a member of the first 8th grade graduating class of the Holy Cross Grade School. During her years at Holy Cross, she was a long-time member of the Women's Club and the Welcome Committee. She also made casseroles for many years for the parish outreach program supporting St. John's Hospice, was a greeter before Masses, and helped out with the parish carnival. Additionally, she was an avid bowler and was a member of the Holy Cross bowling league.
Betty was a committee member for all of her grade school and high school class reunions and maintained many school friendships over the years. One of her favorite activities was going to lunch or dinner with her family as well as friends, whether they were from groups from the Knights of Columbus, DeLasalle Swim Club, St. Charles/Holy Cross Grade School, Notre Dame High School, Beneficial Savings Bank, or Rolling Green. She also enjoyed volunteering and socializing in the cafe at The Assisi House in Aston, PA with the retired Franciscan Sisters.
Betty adored her five grandkids and helped with caring for each of them during their younger years. As with her daughters, she happily attended their sporting events whether it was soccer, basketball, football, baseball, or volleyball. She attended numerous dance recitals and choir events.
For the last four years, Betty spent her time at Wesley Enhanced Living in Media, PA. True to her nature, she participated in just about every activity that they offered including bingo, horse racing, concerts, ice cream socials, annual trips to Ocean City, NJ, St. Patrick's Day celebrations, and the Halloween parade. These were among her favorites. She knew everyone, and everyone knew her. She was cared for by an incredible team of nurses, aides, physical therapy, and other administrative staff. She thrived in the community because of her tight group of fellow residents and activity coordinators who truly became family.
Betty is survived by her loving daughters, Patty Tomczyk Malloy (Rob) and Beth Tomczyk Newsome, her five grandchildren: Matt Malloy (Liz), Courtney Newsome, Kaitlyn Drakeley (Brendan), Jake Newsome (Sydney), Tori Newsome and her two granddogs, Lexi and Toby. In addition, Betty was blessed with three great-grandchildren Colten, Jaxon, and Kinsley Malloy. She is also survived by her brother, Jack Whalen, from Lancaster, PA and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation on Monday, February 2, 2026, 10:00- 11:00am at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2400 N. Providence Rd. Media, PA 19063 and to her Funeral Mass 11:00am in the Church. Interment at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
