Ellen C. Dragunas, 78, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022, in Middleboro, MA.
Ellen lived most of her life in Brockton, MA. She held herself to high expectations in regard to providing for her family. Before she began her nursing career, she did this by working hard as a waitress. Ellen then went on to complete extensive education, including earning an Associate in Science from Massasoit Community College in May of 1975 with high honors, a Bachelor's in Science in Nursing from Southeastern Massachusetts University in 1981, and a Master of Science in Nursing from University of Massachusetts Lowell in June 1998.
She worked nights at South Shore Hospital emergency room as well as on the surgical recovery floor as a Registered Nurse over the course of seventeen years. During much of that time she served as a state delegate to the National Emergency Nurses Association. In that role she was able to travel with colleagues and friends to their national conventions at different sites across the nation. Upon completing her Master's degree, she worked at a number of institutions including Harvard University, Bournewood Hospital, and Waltham Weston Hospital.
Ellen was a voracious reader throughout her life. She loved to read just about anything she could get her hands on, magazines, newspapers, textbooks, medical journals, novels, and more. Her favorites were mysteries and romances. She enjoyed having the time to do this type of reading once she had retired.
Ellen also had a creative side that included sewing clothes for herself and her daughter, Susan. These items were often recognized for their fine quality and Susan wore them with pride. She also sewed household items as well as Halloween costumes for anyone that needed them, especially her grandchildren! Ellen spent time experimenting with new sewing techniques, too.
Ellen enjoyed shopping and fashion. She was especially pleased when she found the best deals on high quality pieces! Another thing Ellen loved was to travel. She enjoyed visiting her cousin, Arthur, on Cape Cod as well as taking bigger trips such as trips to Germany, Austria, and a long-awaited trip to Ireland with family.
Ellen is survived by her sister, Maureen Curtin and her husband Joseph; her sister, Alice Shepherd; her sister, Margaret Gorman and her husband, James; and her sister-in-law, Yong Grant. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Daggett-Duffy; her son, Michael Dragunas and his wife Bridget; and her son, Robert Dragunas and his wife Leslie Sorrento. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Shane, Anna, Brittany, Samuel, Genesis, and Conor along with beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Margaret (Greer) Grant, her brothers, Frank and George Grant, her brother-in-law, Robert Shepherd, and her sister-in-law, Marilyn Beach.
Funeral Mass will be held in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 103 Center St., Bridgewater on Thursday, July 28th at 10:30AM. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
