Today March 29, would have been the 104th birthday of my Godmother Elma Mae.
She was a terrific lady, and was loved by many. I was fortunate to learn much about living a good and decent life from her, even though she probably didn’t realize that. I always looked forward to our visits together, as we would often look at old family photographs and she would relate some long forgotten story or humorous situation from years ago, as she munched on whatever treat or goodie that I had brought along.
As the years went by and she approached a century of life, I was continually amazed by her mental sharpness and memory of people and events from the past, as well as her ability to create beautiful watercolor paintings which she would often send to me and that I will keep and cherish forever. When I would sometimes ask her if there was a secret to living a long and rich life, she would only laugh and say that you just need to remain optimistic as much as possible, look for the positives when the days seem dark, enjoy your family and friends, and laugh as much as you can.
Elma Mae has left a lasting impression on so many lives, and it was a blessing to have loved and learned from her for so many years.
She truly had a wonderful life.

I met Elma in 2014 when my mother became her roommate at Cedarbrook. We had many great visits during that time and they continued after my mother's passing the following year.
Elma was very talented in many ways including her drawing and painting. I have a box of cards with her watercolors and notes from times we weren't able to have in person visits.
It has been a blessing to have met and known Elma for these many years. She led an amazing life!
