Elsie Canfield Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sisco Funeral Chapel - Springdale on Dec. 30, 2025.
Elsie Canfield, 85, passed away peacefully in December 2025, surrounded by love.
Elsie lived life with quiet intentions. When something stirred her interest, she leaned in fully, not for recognition, but for the joy of learning and the good it allowed her to offer others. A Master Gardener, she found joy in nurturing living things, whether tending her garden, volunteering in the Elkins schools, or caring deeply for children. She often said that if we were going to do anything at all, we should take care of the children, and she lived that belief through her service, her Sunday school teaching, and her quiet acts of guidance and encouragement. She had a gift for learning people's stories, listening closely, and making others feel seen, always placing the needs of others above her own.
Her curiosity and creativity shaped the way she moved through the world. She was an avid birdwatcher, with Flight Behavior among her favorite books, and she found meaning in observing both nature and humanity with the same patient attention. A talented potter, she sold all her finest pieces, never keeping the best for herself. She volunteered at Elkins Library, believing deeply in access to learning and community. Her love of words extended across the ocean; her haiku poetry earned recognition and awards from Japan, reflecting her ability to say something beautiful and profound with grace and simplicity. In every role she held, Elsie went beyond, leaving behind a legacy of service, creativity, and quiet devotion to others.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; children, Teresa, Tim, and Tara; and her beloved grandchildren, Jaucelyn, Paul, Hayden, and Pearl. She is also survived by her siblings, Gerald and Joyce, extended family, and dear friends.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the Willard Walker hospice care team, her church family at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ Fayetteville, and all of the beloved friends and family for their compassion and support.
A service will be held at Mt. Olive Cemetery on Saturday, January 3, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elkins Public Library.
Elsie will be remembered always for her love and the legacy of care she leaves behind. She had a natural tenderness for children and cared for them with patience and grace, modeling a quiet, faithful love.
