Elsie Johnston, preceded in death by her husband, JP Johnston; father and mother, Andrew and Mary Reichl; sister, Lorraine Yetto and her husband Charles; stepmother, Rose Reichl; and son, Dale Kiriluk. Elsie leaves behind to cherish her a sister, Karen Tyska; daughters, Jill McGarvey, Lisa Benney, and Sue Holder; grandson, Kenny McGarvey and his wife Cheri; and great-grandchildren, Karson, Ave, and Ella McGarvey.
Elsie was born on July 15, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Augustana School of Nursing in 1952. Her classmates at Augustana School of Nursing recognized her as having a Heart of Gold. She moved to Oklahoma in 1972. She retired from Baptist Medical Center as a Registered Nurse in 1996. Above all, Elsie was always kind to others. Her kindness was genuine. She never saw wrong in anyone. Those who knew her would say she had a gentle heart, very kind, and always kept a positive attitude.
Elsie was a devoted Christian. Her faith in the Lord showed through her actions and prayers. She would proudly share that the Lord gave her strength each and every day. Elsie was strong spiritually, mentally, and physically. She would always brag about that time she threw a guy over her shoulder onto the ground in karate lessons. Her strength kept her family together.
One of grandma's stories she told was when JP first met Elsie at PWP (Parents Without Partners). When JP first laid his eyes on her, he told all of the men at PWP that she was the one and to stay away. He asked for her hand in dance, and at that moment they knew it was forever. They married in 1973. On their honeymoon, JP forgot his wallet. She said they had just enough money to stay at the Motel 6 in Tulsa, eat bologna sandwiches, and just enough gas to make it back home to Oklahoma City.
