Benny was born on October 1, 1934, on the family homestead in Lodi, Oklahoma, to Zelmer Brooks and Alma (Eaves) Brooks. He attended Lodi schools through the seventh grade and later attended Red Oak High School, graduating with the Class of 1952.
Benny heard the call of the United States Army, and was stationed in Iceland. Following active service, Benny also served in the National Guard. He received an honorable discharge in 1959.
In 1963, Benny began his career with the McAlester Fire Department. His dedication and leadership led him to become Fire Chief in 1979, and in 1983 he retired. During retirement, Benny owned and operated a liquor store, a party shop, and managed Al Horton's Thoroughbred horse farm in Bache, and proudly served as the caretaker of Silver Goblin!
When Benny finally decided to "slow down" in retirement, he enjoyed quail hunting, fishing, volunteer firefighting, growing vegetable gardens, and helping his neighbors. Benny also enjoyed attending the yearly Red Oak High School Alumni Banquets and was the oldest graduate for a number of years. During the roll call, Benny would proudly stand up and say, "Benny Brooks, Lodi"!
Benny was preceded in death by his parents: Zelmer and Alma Brooks; brothers and sisters: Ola Coffey, Ada Phillips, Chuck Brooks, Freda Phillips, Rena Turney-Beshears, Calvin Brooks, Frank Brooks, and infant, Zelmer, Jr.
He is survived by his nephew, Gary Brooks and wife Janet; sister-in-law, Wanda Brooks; cousins, Stan Williams, Syble Tull, Joye White, Peggy Reynolds, and Saundra Bigelow; his closest friend of 25 years, Ethel Perry, and her daughter Melissa Lee and husband Peery; along with many other family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
