Elwood Haan Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 22, 2025.
Elwood Rey Haan, a devoted husband, loving father, and respected member of the Hickory Corners community, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 27, 2025, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was 77.
Born on November 6, 1947, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Garrett John and Evelyn Johanna (Gideon) Haan, Bud spent his formative years in the Kalamazoo area. After graduating from Kalamazoo Central High School, he eventually settled in Hickory Corners, Michigan, upon purchasing a home on Little Long Lake. A strong commitment to quality and integrity defined his professional life. For four decades, Bud was the dedicated co-owner of Richland Painting Company, contributing his skill and hard work to the business and the community it served.
Bud was universally known for his profound kindness and his willingness to go out of his way to help anyone. His greatest joy was found in the simple pleasures of life, often spent outdoors. He was an avid enthusiast of hunting, fishing, and gardening, finding peace and contentment in nature, particularly at the lake he called home.
His warmth extended far beyond his immediate circle; all the cousins on both sides of the family affectionately called him "Uncle Bud," a cherished nickname they carried into adulthood, with many referring to him as their "favorite uncle."
Bud's greatest legacy is his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of many years, Lori Ann (Varricchio) Haan. He was a dedicated father to his three children: Andrea Van Hof and her husband Christopher, Alexander Haan and his wife Jamie, and Ansley Haan. He adored his two grandchildren, Dexter and Frederik "Fritz" Van Hof.
He is also survived by his siblings: Garold "Gary" Haan, Howard Haan (and Marshie Burcham), and David Haan (and Connie Elsener). He leaves behind several cherished nieces and nephews: Randy and Sheri Haan, Howard Jr. and Wendy Haan, Brenda Haan, and Scott and Megan Haan.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett John and Evelyn Johanna Haan.
Celebration of Life
In accordance with Bud's wishes, the family will hold a Celebration of Life service to honor his memory in the summer of 2026 on Little Long Lake. Details regarding the exact date and time will be announced closer to the event.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Bud's memory by extending a kindness to a neighbor or supporting a local conservation effort, reflecting his lifelong generosity and love for the outdoors.
