Elwood Severns

Elwood Severns passed on September 22, 2025 at the age of 82.

He was married to the late Nancy (Turner) for 48 years. He is survived by three children, Elwood (Marion) Jr., Nancy (Tom) McGonigle and Walter (Barbara); and grandchildren, Matthew, Erika, Marisa, Lindsay, Courtney, Hailey, Hanna, Kevin, Karlee, Taylor, Nicholas and Ashley; and great grandchildren, Evelyn and Cameron. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Madeline Severns.

Elwood served our nation in the Army with time spent in Germany. He enjoyed entertaining his fellow troops. In 1971, he formed a band, Woody and the Ridgerunners and was the lead singer and guitarist, playing all over the area. He loved to entertain everyone at any event he attended, singing, playing the guitar and having great family moments. Elwood was a truck driver for R and L carriers where he earned an award for 1,000,000 miles without an accident. He stayed on as a security guard. He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. His family meant everything to him and he had that ability to make everyone around him feel like family. He was a life member of the Maple Shade Independent Fire Company #1, serving 50 years. Even years after he was done responding to the fires, you’d find him on the bench outside of the firehouse enjoying a coffee and his pipe, greeting everyone who walked by. And for many years he called the Bingo games. He loved and was a fan of the Eagles and the Phils.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday September 26, 6-9 p.m. and Saturday September 27, 8-10 a.m. at Mark C. Tilghman Funeral Home, 38 North Forklanding Road, Maple Shade where there will be a 10 a.m. service. Interment Locustwood Cemetery, Cherry Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations to Maple Shade Independent Fire Company #1, 53 South Maple Ave, Maple Shade, NJ 08052, will be appreciated.
