Emilie Henein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2009.
On a clear December 28, 1933 in Beni Suef, Egypt; Emilie was born to Selim and Sania Ghobrial. She was fifth of seven children. The eldest was Mahassen, followed by Sabri, Soad, Nana, Zizi and Magdy. Starting school at the Lycée Français in Cairo (where she was nicknamed Sophie), she went on to graduate from Cairo University with a degree in French literature. Introduced to a budding engineer, Saad, smitten by her charm, he asked her hand in marriage. He has since secretly named her “La Charmante. Their first child, Sherif, was followed three years later by Samy. When Abdel Nasser came along, they decided it was time to leave Egypt. Saad took a job with the United Nations, they packed their bags and with barely any money or belongings, off they went to Uganda followed six months later by New York. Saad's work took Emilie all over the world; to Morocco, Tanzania, Malawi and many others. Emilie naturally adapted wherever she lived. In New York, she worked as an English Teacher. She also worked as secretary to Ambassadors of South Korea, Rwanda, and India; at USAID and the Iranian mission to the United Nations. She had a passion for gardening, playing scrabble, solving anagrams, and baking among many other interests. She made the best chocolate cakes! Her joy was made complete when she would spend time with her sons, daughters-in-law (Christina & Mona) and granddaughters, Danielle and Natalie. Upon retirement, Emilie & Saad came to live near Samy in San Diego. They settled in Del Mar where Emilie proceeded to setup a beautiful home. She made many friends and was gracious to all. She delighted in bringing people together. We can truly say she had a full and wonderful life which touched & impacted many people. We have truly lost an angel, and heaven has gained a Saint. She will be especially remembered for her enthusiasm for life, sweet temperament, love of family and most of all, for her adoration of our Lord Jesus.
