Emma Acheson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 27, 2026.
Emma Jane Acheson passed away at her Vancouver home on Jan. 27, 2026, at the age of 91. Born June 23, 1934, in Wichita, Kansas, she was one of three children of Bernie and Myrtle Smith.

On Jan. 16, 1954, Emma married Ed Acheson, and together they moved to Washougal, where they raised four children. Emma earned her nursing degree from Clark College and worked for several years as a registered nurse at Vancouver Memorial Hospital. In 1976, Ed and Emma ran Washougal Arts and Crafts and later owned the Big Dipper ice cream shop in downtown Washougal.

Emma was known for her gentle and kind spirit, touching the hearts of everyone she met. Her greatest joy was her family, whom she cherished deeply and who loved her just as much. She enjoyed supporting her loved ones at their sporting events and hosting holiday gatherings. Emma also gave back to the community through various volunteer projects. She loved watching sports - especially the Seattle Seahawks and Mariners - and enjoyed playing slots at local casinos.

Emma was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Ed (in 2021), and her son, Lonnie (in 2025). She is survived by three children: Tammy Dinius of Washougal; Larry Acheson and his wife, Lorri, of Tigard, Oregon; Jerry Acheson and his wife, Heather, of Washougal; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; close friends including Don and Shari Blackett of Washougal; and her neighbors at Bridgewood Senior Living in Vancouver.

A private memorial service is planned.
