Emma Lynn Gainey Hayes, 87, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 14, 2025, with her daughter by her side.

Emma was born on June 16, 1938, in Cumberland County to the late James Gainey and Bettie Wood Gainey. She graduated from Grays Creek High School and later married the love of her life, Cecil Hayes. Together, they shared a deep devotion to God, each other, and gospel music, joyfully singing at weddings, funerals, and special church events throughout the years.

For 42 years, Emma was a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church before joining Village Baptist Church, where she remained active as her health allowed. She served on numerous committees, played softball, and cherished every moment spent with her church family-especially her beloved Sunday School class. Emma never met a stranger. She loved to talk, enjoyed shopping trips, and was known for her generous heart. She was always willing to help anyone in need. She retired from Highland Lumber Co. after 33 ½ years of service where she worked in accounting.

Emma had a lifelong love for working in her yard and a love for animals, especially her cherished cats and dogs.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Cecil Hayes.

Emma is survived by her devoted daughter, Diana Hayes; sister, Margaret Melkus and husband Paul; nephews, Clay Campbell and wife Angie, and Mark Kelley; nieces, Sherri Pait and husband Larry, and Paula Bullard and husband Ray; sister-in-law, Joanne Kelley; brother-in-law, Albert Hayes and wife Jeanette; along with many other great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Chloe and cat, Sebastian Cecil.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 2:20 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2025, at The Village Baptist Church followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 2:30 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey St., Fayetteville, N.C. 28301.
