Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory LTD - Mulford ChapelEmmett D. Porter, a beloved engineer, devoted family man, and courageous veteran, passed away peacefully at home on March 6, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 4, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Loren Porter and Pearl (Guffey) Cramer. Emmett dedicated over 35 years of his life to his career at Sundstrand, where he held various roles that showcased his engineering prowess and commitment to excellence. He married Nancy E. Conti on December 1, 1973, and together their companionship and shared experiences defined a beautiful life together.
Emmett was not just an accomplished professional; he was the embodiment of compassion and care. He always prioritized the needs of others above his own, making him a cherished figure to all who had the privilege to know him. His generosity and warmth were felt deeply by friends and family alike, creating an enduring legacy of kindness that will remain in the hearts of many.
In addition to his remarkable career, Emmett served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. His bravery earned him several commendations, including the Purple Heart Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal with two stars, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Emmett's military service was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his country, a quality that he carried with him into all facets of his life.
Emmett found immense joy in the great outdoors. He cherished special fishing trips with Nancy to Minocqua, Wisconsin, where he would skillfully catch, clean, and fry the fish they brought home and fishing trips to Canada and Lake Erie with his sons and friends. His love for nature extended to his meticulously maintained yard and his profound adoration of animals. Beyond fishing, Emmett was an avid golf fan, participating in numerous golf leagues and enjoying the excitement of professional tournaments on television. He found pleasure in friendly competitions, including bowling, where his laughter and spirit brought joy to those around him.
Nothing quite captured Emmett's playful nature better than his prized possession, an Audi S5 convertible sports car, which he drove with pride. This car was more than a vehicle; it was a symbol of his accomplishments and zest for life.
Emmett is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; his children, Kelly Malone of Loves Park, Brent (Angela) Porter of Jacksonville, Florida, and Vince (Tracy) Porter of South Beloit; grandchildren, Jason Malone, Amber Malone, Trent Porter, Zach Porter, and Cady Porter; and cat, Boots. He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 grandchildren, Joel and Stephen Malone; 2 sisters; 2 brothers; and dogs, Cricket and Cody.
The family would like to give a special thank you to OSF Hospice, especially nurses Bridget and Julie, the VA for their support and help, and the Rockford Visiting Angels, especially Dawn and Tracy.
His legacy is filled with cherished memories of adventure and joy, influencing the lives of many. He will be dearly missed by all who held him close, as his love and kindness leave an indelible mark on our hearts.
Rest in peace, Emmett D. Porter. Your spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
