COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Emmie Gibson Burns, 85, will be held Friday, May 8, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church with burial following in the churchyard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10 – 11 a.m., at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Burns died Monday, May 4, 2009. Born in Allendale, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Elma Clyde Purvis and Barrett Cicero Gibson. Mrs. Burns was a graduate of the College of Charleston, where she was a member of Delta Zeta. She received a Masters in Education from the University of South Carolina, and gave 28 years of dedicated service as a Special Ed Teacher in Richland One. She was a member of St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church and Daughters of the American Revolution. Surviving are her loving husband of 64 years, Clyde R. Burns; son, Dr. Ronald Burns and his wife, Kris; daughter, Linda Burns Jackson and her husband, Rick; and daughter, Susan Burns Yelton, all of Columbia; grandchildren, Kate Gellatly and her husband, Mike of Columbia, Dan Burns of Denver, Colo., Jon Burns of Hickory, N.C., Whit Jackson of Charleston, S.C., Lauren Jackson, of Columbia, Dana Jackson of Irmo and Brooks Yelton of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Matt, Emmie, Jackson and Hailey all of Columbia; nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Prince. Memorials may be made to St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church, 6408 Bridgewood Road, Columbia, S.C. 29206.
