I have been Shirley's friend since Junior High. Both her parents were wonderful people, always warm and welcoming when I visited their home.

I'll share a particular memory of Pat. After high school, and before I started college I was looking for a summer job. Pat let me know of an opening where he worked. He went out of his way to help me through the application process, and I'm sure he put a good word in with his employer.

There was a mandatory training course, perhaps one or two weeks. I faithfully attended all classes, studied hard and passed the test, which was also required for a job offer.

I was offered a job, and only at that point did I realize that it was not a summer job at all, but a full-time position. I was horrified. Somehow, I missed that extremely important piece of information. There was perhaps only a month left before I started college, and I had no choice but to decline the offer.

Now I had the difficult task of letting Pat know. I was mortified, and embarrassed. When I thanked him and broke the news that I had turned down the position, he handled it in his kind and gentle manner, more concerned about me than the fact that I must have humiliated him with his employer, after he had gone to bat for me.

I was ever grateful. I learned two important life lessons that summer that I have carried with me ever since: First, get the facts! And even more important are kindness and grace.

Thank you Pat.
