Hollywood always seems to take liberties with truth. But we must never forget the real heroes. Especially now more than ever we need real heroes. Totally accurate or not the great escape is still a great way to remember those who gave so much for us.

I have always been fascinated with the story of "The Great Escape." While the movie was "Hollywood" in so many ways, the book(s) about the escape were fascinating. Mr. Dowling is a hero in every true sense of the word. Thank you for your heroism. Rest in peace.

My condolences to Mr. Dowling's family. My father was also a POW in Stalag Luft III. He was a B-17 pilot shot down on Hitler's birthday, 4/20/44 and was held at the camp for a year until he was liberated at the end of the war. The movie The Great Escape was always a favorite of my Dad's even though Hollywood put their own stamp on it. The movie remains a favorite of my husband's.
