Mr. Ermias Kebede Worku Leaving behind an unforgettable name is a rare privilege. This also sig- nifies that one's actions during their lifetime will endure as part of history. All deeds, whether good or bad, are evaluated based on their time and circumstances.
Mr. Ermias Kebede Worku was born in central Addis Ababa, in Kazan- chis, on August 21, 1956. Known affectionately as "Ermi," this nickname was used not only by friends who grew up playing in the dirt fields and throwing balls with him but also by those who only spent a few hours in his company. His effortless ability to communicate with both young and old always astonished others. Ermias was the second-born and eldest son among the eleven children of his father, Colonel Kebede Worku, and his mother, Mrs. Menbere Sahle.
Fortunately, Ermias spent his childhood with his grandmother, Mrs. Shtaye Ayasu, who raised him with strong religious morals and a special love for his country. This upbringing served as a strong foundation for the rest of his life. His remarkable ability to be loved and understood by all, combined with his strong perseverance for his country and willingness to pay the price for his beliefs, made him a good example for others. He was blessed to leave behind a legacy that will transcend generations.
As soon as he was old enough, Ermias completed his primary and sec- ondary education at Beta Maryam and Menelik Secondary Schools in Ad- dis Ababa. He then graduated with a diploma from Addis Ababa Tegbareid Technical and Vocational School and entered the workforce. During this period, he was employed in various government and private institutions and engaged in private businesses. As the eldest son, he took on the re- sponsibility of raising his younger siblings, advising and disciplining them, and becoming the pillar of the family. The love and respect he received from his brothers and sisters throughout his life were immense.
Ermias' exemplary character extended beyond his immediate family. He led a life filled with love and compassion for others. The Kazanchis supermarket in Addis Ababa, along with the playful childhood
games with his friends, remained his favorite memories, which he often reminisced about. Playing sports was another important aspect of Ermias' life. He not only loved football but also mastered it. He played football with his friends from the village of Afer Meda to Kanbolojo, leaving behind cherished memories for himself and many others. He spent wonderful times playing football in clubs like Ethiopian Airlines.
Ermias was incredibly well-rounded. He loved his family, his country,
and his people, and he was determined to pay the price without fear or greed, never hesitating to contribute. No matter what difficult times he went through, his steadfastness for his country and people was unwavering.
After the collapse of the Derg regime in Ethiopia, he participated in the All Amhara People's Organization (AAPO), established under the leader- ship of the veteran Ethiopian medical expert and scholar Prof. Asrat Wold- eyes. Ermias played an unforgettable role in leading and coordinating the movement in Addis Ababa. All those who knew him closely during that time can testify to his perseverance during that difficult and challenging period. He publicly advocated for the unity of Ethiopia and the equality of its citizens, condemned injustice, and demanded justice for the oppressed and marginalized. He taught many, led them, and left a legacy that will be remembered for eternity.
Life has its own path and calling. From 1995 until the end of his life, Ermias moved to the United States, leaving his beloved country for anoth- er chapter. During his stay in America, he joined his siblings in California and lived in San Jose, San Diego, and Fresno. Throughout his life's ups and downs, Ermias faced numerous challenges but showed strength and re- silience. Even during illness, he never complained and remained grateful for everything he had. He was strong in his spiritual life, and his deep love for St. Gabriel from childhood never wavered. "St. Gabriel will never leave me!" he often said, maintaining his gratitude in his conversations.
Mr. Ermias was married to Mrs. Mentiwab Shita and was the father of Shetaye Ermias and Tenbeta Ermias. He was blessed with grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He was always grateful for this wonderful blessing from God.
As per the divine will of God, life's course is determined by the Creator. At the age of 68, on May 16, 2024, Ermias passed away in Fresno, Califor- nia, following medical care. Summoned by the divine presence that once guided him, he found tranquility and departed from tahe toils and troubles of this earthly existence. We sincerely pray for his soul to rest eternally and for him to be kept alongside the great ones and his parents. Ermias' mem- ory, his kindness, and his love will forever live within our hearts. Praise be to God for everything.
"Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails."
