Erna Bauer

Erna Bauer (née Suttmann), of Cinnaminson, NJ, passed away peacefully at home-her favorite place-on August 2, 2025, after a beautiful life well lived. She was born on April 3, 1930, in Raseiniai, Lithuania, to the late Otto Suttmann and Adolfine Lorenz. Erna was the devoted wife of the late Friedrich "Fritz" Bauer until his passing in 2014. She was the loving and caring mother to the late Ralph F. Bauer and Ingrid C. Bauer, whom she cared for with all her heart. She was the last surviving sibling of Ella, Otto, and Robert. Erna's early life was shaped by extraordinary courage and resilience. She immigrated to the United States during World War II in 1949, escaping invasions by horse and carriage with only the clothes on her back and her younger sister, Ella, by her side. By 1952, her parents and brother joined them in Philadelphia, where they reunited and built a new life together. A proud American, Erna fully embraced her new country and culture. She worked in a Philadelphia department store, where she not only loved the job but also delighted in sharing her employee discount with friends and family. She helped many fellow German women find their footing in the U.S., forming lifelong friendships along the way. Erna was truly ahead of her time-a trailblazer, an independent spirit, and the matriarch of her family. She created a beautiful life with her beloved Fritz and was a dedicated mother to her children, who faced unique challenges. Her deep faith, sharp wit, and positive outlook never wavered, even through life's hardships. She had a gift for finding joy in the everyday and encouraged everyone around her to do the same. Known for her contagious laughter, strong opinions, and grounded presence, Erna was a social butterfly who loved catching up with "the girls" and sharing stories. She adored her garden, trimming bonsai trees, and sitting on the bench by the koi pond with Fritz. Her attention to detail, wisdom beyond her years, and passion for her beliefs left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Erna will be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews, and friends. She held her family together with grace, strength, and an unshakable sense of purpose. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 16th, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Palmyra, where Erna was a devoted member for many years. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by urn burial in the church garden.
