Dr. Ernest Mendewee Barnett, a distinguished educator and devoted family man, passed away on May 20, 2025, in Hope Mills, North Carolina, at the age of 70.
Born on May 3, 1955, in Segbwema, Sierra Leone, Dr. Barnett dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the nurturing of future generations.Dr. Barnett attended the Albert Academy in Sierra Leone, before migrating to the U.S. to pursue higher education. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He further pursued academic excellence, culminating in a doctorate degree from the University of South Dakota. His academic contributions were profound, as he served as a professor at multiple universities, including Fayetteville State University. Throughout his career, he taught and mentored hundreds of students, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
Not only a committed educator, Dr. Barnett was also a generous volunteer, contributing his expertise as a grant writer, serving as an NSF book reviewer, and mentoring international students across various campuses. His efforts in nurturing diverse educational environments reflect his belief in the power of education to transform lives.
In recognition of his exceptional teaching, Dr. Barnett was awarded the title of Outstanding Professor during American Education Week at Langston University in 2014. Additionally, he was a proud member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, highlighting his commitment to academic excellence and educational leadership.
Outside of academia, Dr. Barnett enjoyed engaging in sports, with a particular passion for tennis,soccer, and cricket. His zest for life and community involvement created a legacy of dedication and inspiration.
Dr. Barnett is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Bambanya Barnett, and their three children: Ernest Barnett, Jr., Adama Barnett, and Abigail Barnett. He is also survived by his siblings: Adama Barnett, Victor Barnett, Hannah Fefegula, Moses Barnett, Mannah David Barnett, and Betty Barnett, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who cherished him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Barnett; mother, Rosa Barnett; and siblings,Winston Barnett, Annie Fobie, and Marie Barnett. The memories of his kindness, mentorship,and unwavering support will continue to resonate within the hearts of all those he touched.
Visitation services will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service, located at 610 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301. The funeral service will take place the following day, Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Haymount United Methodist Church,located at 1700 Fort Bragg Rd, Fayetteville, NC 28303, starting at 11:00 AM.
Dr. Ernest Mendewee Barnett will be remembered not only for his academic contributions but also for his profound impact on the lives of his family, students, and community. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, intellect, and commitment to education that will be cherished for years to come.
