He retired from Albuquerque Public Schools and was an avid Dallas Cowboys and 'Incredible Hulk' fan.

He was preceded in death by his son Ernie Jr and his parents John Sr. and Socorro Duran. He will be greatly missed by his family, son David and wife Jolyn, daughter Bernadette and husband Joel. His grandchildren Ernesto, Eryana, Emilio, Delilah, D'Ondra, Davida, David Jr. Andrew, JonDavid, Luanna and Rose (and knew him as "Grandpa Hulk"), brothers John Duran Jr., and Tony Duran and Sister Roberta and husband Danny Gabaldon, many nieces and nephews, best friend and fellow musician Rick Lucero and his faithful Yorkie companion, Chico.
