Ernest's birthday is today. I'm sure he is missed. Sorry I didn't get to see him later in life. Looks like he turned out to be be a well accomplished man and did much with his life. I think I was on Okracoke Island once sitting in the parking lot of a building on the bay watching the sunset, at the same time Ernest was inside the building teacher teachers. When I got home I noticed his Facebook post about it and realized we were that close!! Lord have mercy, bless Ernest Johnson.

Ernest and I met in the tenth grade. He was the first Black person I would actually call a friend. He´s listed as one of my brothers on Facebook. Yesterday I got to wondering why I hadn´t seen any posts from him so I looked him up this morning only to find out he had passed. I´m saddened, and stunned. He was a great guy. One thing he and I joked about in high school was that he would never be able to open a restaurant or motel and call it by his name, Howard Johnson´s. I´m sure the thousands of people he made an impact on will never forget him. And I´m looking forward to seeing him in Our Father´s House in the future.

I am so sorry to hear of Ernest's passing. He was a gifted and deeply caring educator and always thinking about how to impact the future, which made him a great fit for NCCAT. We shared a love for jazz and many conversations that I will treasure. Rest in peace.

I was reminded of the power of children´s literature for all ages at a NCCAT seminar with Ernest. In his honor I have purchased ten requested books to be delivered to children in the North Carolina mountains who have lost everything. Peace be with all who mourn.

Ernest was a brilliant man and I enjoyed discussing education with him when I was teaching middle school. We often talked about the diversity of students and how each had different cultural needs as well as role models. We talked about the need for minority teachers, not only to teach, but to relate to someone who looked like them. He was a great man and he will be missed.

Ernest and I worked construction together not too long after graduating from high school. We gad a lot of opportunity to talk. We both had great ideas for the future. His Facebook posts about eating healthy and exercise made me think think he was going to live a lo g time, way past me. How could this happen. His posts seemed to suddenly stop. Now I know why. This is very saddening. My condolences to his wife and family. What a guy.
