Ernest Mey Obituary
Ernest Mey, 78, of Vermilion, passed away Friday, October 31, 2025 at Mercy New Life Hospice after a brief illness.
Born on September 27, 1947 in Vermilion, Ernie was a lifelong resident who took great pride in his hometown and community.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Ernie served during the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Bronze Star for his dedicated service to his country.
Ernie spent 50 years with Ford Motor Company in Lorain and Avon, retiring in 2023. He valued hard work, loyalty, and the friendships he built throughout his career.
He was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermilion and a member of AMVETS Post #22. In his younger years, Ernie enjoyed playing baseball, and throughout his life he loved watching sports and movies, admiring classic cars, tackling projects around the house, and caring for his family-especially his children and granddaughter, who were his greatest joy.
He is survived by his daughter, Amanda (Jesse Mobley) Mey of Berea; his son, Adam (Emily Montgomery) Mey; his granddaughter, Kharma Mey; his sister, Barbara (Ed) Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, John and Martha (née Kellat) Mey; his brothers Walter, Edward, John Jr., and Robert Sr. Mey; his sisters Helen Newkirk, Emma Griggs, Alice Herman, and Pauline Holtcamp; his granddaughter, Asta Nicole Mey; and his beloved dog, Moko.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery with military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to AMVETS Post #22, Vermilion or the Wounded Warrior Project.
