left us on November 12, 2025, at the age of 83. Ernest was a preceded in death by Arthur M. Mitchell, II (Father), Elizabeth Alameda Cunningham Mitchell (Mother), Emma Jean Mitchell (Stepmother), Arthur M. Mitchell, III (Brother), and Joan Mitchell (wife).
Born on July 11, 1942, in Jamestown, New York. Ernest grew up with a passion for football, basketball, and track. Throughout their life, he was known as a hard-working person, enthusiastic about life, and often described as kind. One of his greatest traits was his ability to make those around him laugh. His granddaughters are still trying to figure out who "Mrs. Calabash" is and why they should say goodnight to her.
Ernest is survived by Eugene Mitchell (Brother), Todd Mitchell (Son), Etrudy Mitchell (Daughter-in-law), Imani Mitchell (Granddaughter), Elon Mitchell (Granddaughter), JoAnne Stewart (Surrogate Granddaughter), as well as many dear friends and extended family. He will be deeply missed by all who have the privilege of knowing him.
To pay respect to Ernest and share your memories of him. Family and friends are invited to attend a
viewing on November 20, 2025, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home, 1003 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd SW, Atlanta, GA 30310.
A celebration of Ernest's life, followed by a reception will be held on Friday November 21st from 4 PM – 6 PM. Viridian Towers 1825 Clifton Rd N E, Atlanta, GA 30329. All who wish to remember and honor him are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Ernest Maxwell Mitchell's memory to Wesley Woods Foundation and Jazz 91.9 WCLK, a cause close to his heart. May Ernest's legacy of love, compassion, and joy live on in the hearts of all who knew him
