“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” – Maya Angelou
Ernst “David” Smith, age 48 of Kalamazoo, went to be with his Lord on September 23, 2024. His light shines on in the hearts of everyone who was blessed to know him.
Sweet David, along with his twin brother Michael, was born on December 4, 1975, in Kalamazoo, the sons of Robert Smith and Dianne Sayre. Along with their sister Stacy and brother Christopher, grew up in Vicksburg. David and Michael attended Croyden School and the Kennedy Center. They also attended programs through ROI, CLO, and the MRC.
More than anything, David enjoyed being included whether it was a ride to the store, an event at church, or a family gathering. He was involved at New Apostolic Church where he loved to sing in the choir. Singing was a heart’s desire for David, who thrived in the unity of the choir and being in God’s house.
Family was everything to David. Part of him was lost when his twin Michael died in 2005. He never lost his joy for life and spending time with his family though. Trips to go to the thrift stores and simple time spent sharing a meal or sitting together in church were his favorites.
David was a pure reflection of light and love to those around him. His laughter was genuine and truly contagious. He always wanted everyone to be happy and was quick to apologize if he thought you may be upset. David’s life mission was to bring joy to others.
His family includes his parents: Dianne (Jerry) Sayre-Fluty and Robert Smith; his sister Stacy (Aaron) Lohroff; his brother Christopher (Laura Bolen) Smith; his nieces and nephews: Sydney, Ashley, Christal, C.J., Nolan, and Sloane; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother Michael, his grandparents: John Sayre, Fred Veld, Jerry Smith, Evelyn Smith, and Ruth Veld, and his step-brother Ernie Fluty.
Friends may visit with David’s family on Friday, October 4th from 4:00-7:00 PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo.
