Esther Elizabeth "Liz" Kretschmar, age 86, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, in Madison, Wisconsin. She was born on December 3, 1938, in Eureka, South Dakota, to parents, Paul and Bertha Kretschmar (Homeyer).

Liz graduated from Eureka High School in 1956, South Dakota State University in 1960, and earned her Masters of Library Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1985. Her passion for education and literature led her to a fulfilling career as a High School English teacher in Fredericksburg, Maryland, and Saint Paul, Minnesota, and later as a dedicated librarian for 30 years at Madison Area Technical College (Madison College). Liz was married to Thomas Wittmayer from 1959 - 1974.

Liz was a Master Bridge Player, an avid reader, and a lover of theatrical and musical performances. She also loved gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Liz is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kristen and John Fitzpatrick of Flourtown, Pennsylvania, and Paula Wittmayer and Eric Eberhardt of North Salem, New York. She was a proud grandmother to Molly and Kathleen Fitzpatrick and Allison and Thomas Eberhardt. Liz also leaves behind several nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Bertha Kretschmar; her brother, Dr. Paul Kretschmar; and her twin sister, Elinor Wenzel (Kretschmar).

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Oakwood Village East Community for embracing Liz as a cherished member.

Liz was always helpful and greeted me with a smile when I was in the library. Her warmth and smile was present many years later when we were in an exercise class together. May she rest in peace.
