Esther A. Puthoff, 96, of Canistota passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at the Good Samaritan Center in Canistota. A visitation will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Montrose, at 6:00 pm with the family present on Sunday, November 2. A rosary and prayer service to follow at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 3 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church., Montrose. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Marion.

Esther Puthoff was born on July 8, 1929 to Peter and Elstienna (Wieman) Viet in Monroe, SD. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1947 and continued her education at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. She worked for several years as a receptionist at an insurance company in Sioux Falls. Esther enjoyed attending dances at the Arkota Ballroom where she met the love of her life, Alfred Puthoff, They were united in marriage on February 11, 1953 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Humboldt, SD. From this union, twelve children were born.

Esther owned and operated the Kozy Korner Motel in Canistota for many years. After retirement Esther enjoyed crocheting, doing word search puzzles, playing card games and Farkle with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed watching the Game Show Network. She was especially known for her cooking and baking, in particular her homemade bread and buns.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Kathy Townsend of Canistota, Jeanette (Kenny) Powell of Harrisburg, Theresa Peterson of Sioux Falls, Kenny Puthoff of Canistota, Kristy (Dan) Thielsen of Mitchell, Mary Keiser of Sioux Falls, Deanna (Rach) Tieszen of Sioux Falls, Brian (Kathie) Puthoff of Harrisburg, Jeff Puthoff of Sioux Falls, and Brad (Robin) Puthoff of Watertown; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Esther is also survived by her siblings, Peter Viet of Sioux Falls, Shirley (Orville) Matthies of Chancellor, and Bob (Theola) Viet of Sioux Falls, her sister-in-law Marian Puthoff of Hartford, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alfred, two daughters, Judy Puthoff and Donna Stewart, son-in-law, Terry Keiser; grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Townsend, and Ashley Peterson, great-granddaughter, Jaycee Beckman, two sisters, Tillena Carlson and Delores Radel, and brother, Lawrence Viet. www.kinzleyfh.com
