Ethel Vermilye Layton of Easton, Maryland, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, at the age of 82.

Born on December 5, 1942, in Plainfield, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Ruth Anderson Vermilye of Easton, Maryland, and the late William H. Vermilye of Batavia, New York.

Ethel enjoyed a long and successful career in banking, serving her community for more than 25 years. Beyond her professional life, she was a master gardener, a hospice volunteer, and a member of the GFWC Women's Club of the Eastern Shore. She was also an exceptional gourmet cook and found great joy in sharing her creations with family and friends.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, D. Brooke Layton; her son, R. Stewart Keating (Vicki); and her sister, Marguerite Vermilye Beebe (Tod).

Ethel is survived by her loving daughter, Parker Keating Spurry (Joe), and her brother, W. Moorhead Vermilye (Sally). She was a devoted grandmother to Brittney Keating Azoury (Said), Hunter Martin Keating, Stewart McLeod Spurry, and Eliza Spurry Craig (Alex). She is also survived by her stepdaughters, Elizabeth Powell (Jay) and Jennifer Layton, and step-grandchildren, Marianne and Andrew Powell.

Ethel adored her five beautiful great-granddaughters and took immense pride and joy in her growing family.

She will be remembered for her love of family, her bright personality, and her quick wit.

A celebration of life will be held at her daughter's home on November 15th, 2025 at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michaels Community Center or Christmas in St. Michaels.
