Ethel Reid Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by W.H. Bryant, A. E. Grier & Sons Funeral Home on Dec. 3, 2025.
Ethel Mae Torrence Reid was born on September 12, 1937 in Mecklenburg County at home. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was the daughter of the late Tom Torrence and Mattie Rivens Torrence. She exchanged her earthly vessel for a place in heaven on November 27, 2025 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.

Ethel was a devoted woman of faith, family and service whose life touched many. She received her early education at Caldwell School in the Mecklenburg County Schools system. Guided by her strong values and warm spirit, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Thomas Reid on October 23, 1954, a loving union that remained a cornerstone of her life.

Ethel dedicated many years of service to her community through her work with the Mecklenburg Senior Citizens Hot Lunch Program, from which she later retired. Her commitment to caring for others also led her to earn a Nurse Aide certificate from Huntersville Hospital, a role through which she offered compassion and comfort to those in need.

Her hobbies reflected the warmth of her spirit, studying the Word of God, canning the vegetables she lovingly grew, playing Scrabble, working word puzzles, dancing, traveling and surrounding herself with beautiful flowers. Faith was the heartbeat of her life, and she poured her love, time, and strength into every church that became part of her story.

Throughout her life, she faithfully served in every church she called home. She joined Hunters Chapel United Methodist Church at an early age, where her journey of service began. She served with devotion as a trustee, lovingly guiding the kitchen and stained-glass window projects under Rev. Paul Perkins. Her voice and her heart found a home at Davidson Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and lay speaker, sang in the Senior Choir, and embraced the fellowship of the Presbyterian Women. She continued to bless others through her ministry as a deacon at Reeves Temple AME Zion Church, and at Torrence Chapel AME Zion Church, a place deeply meaningful to her, as it was where her father worshiped and was laid to rest. Her service was never just duty, it was love in action, woven through every congregation she touched.

She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Reid Sr., Son Roderick P. Reid, Brothers James Torrence (Georgia), Robert Torrence, Dolean Houston, Sisters Mary Graham (Gray), Dorothy Reid (David), Ossie Nichols (Robert), Emma Nash (David).

Those left to cherish her memory are her Children, Bernitha R. Springs (John), Bernetta R. Graham,Thomas Reid, Jr. and Everette A. Reid; Eight Grandchildren - Kebe Wilkerson (Avery), Colan Graham, Jermaica Morrison Sr, Kofi Springs Sr., Tiante Reid (Ashley), Quinton Worthy (Tina), Kareem Taylor and Anarah Graham.
