Eugene "Gene" Godshall
March 24, 1945 – October 24, 2025
Eugene "Gene" Godshall, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and respected mechanic, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Born on March 24, 1945, in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gene was the son of a schoolteacher mother and a furniture salesman father. He spent his formative years in a 19th-century farmhouse, where he cultivated a lifelong passion for mechanics, often found building go-karts and repairing lawn mowers in the family's barn.
Gene inherited his mechanical aptitude from his grandfather, who encouraged his curiosity and gifted him tools to tinker in the basement. Though academics were not his favorite pursuit, Gene thrived in auto shop classes during high school and found his calling in mechanical work.
Gene's life was marked by deep faith and enduring love. He met Phyllis, the love of his life, through their Baptist church community, and they married after five years of courtship. Shortly after, Gene entered the U.S. Army, serving in the motor pool during the Vietnam War as part of the Army Security Agency (ASA), where he earned Top Secret Crypto Security Clearance. He continued his service in the Army Reserves for five years before transitioning to a career as a heavy equipment mechanic to be closer to home and family.
Gene's career spanned decades and states, from Pennsylvania to Puerto Rico, where his diagnostic skills were highly sought after. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family and ensure his daughters received a Christian education. For nearly 30 years, he also served as the groundskeeper for a large estate in Blue Bell, PA, home to a prestigious arts summer camp.
A turning point in Gene's spiritual journey came during long commutes, listening to radio preachers. This led him to a deeper study of the Bible and enrollment at Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned a master's-level certificate while working full-time. A highlight of his theological studies was a three-week journey to Israel, which left a lasting impression on him.
Gene and Phyllis shared a ministry of encouragement, founding Simple Gifts Ministries to support small churches across the country. Their travels in a fifth-wheel camper took them to Florida, New England, and the Midwest, where they served congregations and cared for family members in need.
Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in his 50s, Gene remained active and engaged. He enjoyed simple pleasures like warm rice pudding, gospel hymns, and watching Jay Leno's Garage. He was known for his integrity, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family and faith.
Gene is preceded in death by his sister Nancy, who also battled Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his beloved wife Phyllis, daughters Karin and Amanda; grandchildren, and extended family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched through his work, ministry, and kindness.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 4th, 2025 at 10 AM at The First Presbyterian Church Mt Dora.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared on the tribute wall.

Yesterday

Got to meet Karin on Saint Simons and hear about her dedicated and talented father Gene. She is fortunate to have a caring husband and son who helped with her dad. Wish you all great peace. With the passing of a parent comes a new inner quiet and strength ... Tony
