Eugene Johnson, Sr., affectionately known as "Smiley" for his warm spirit and signature grin, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on May 17, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia, at the age of 82.
Born on August 18, 1942, in North Carolina, Eugene lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and a deep love for people. True to his nickname, he never met a stranger-everywhere he went, he brought joy and knew someone, always making others feel welcomed and seen.
Eugene was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Mary Johnson, who will cherish his memory. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Wilma Bryant (Donnel), Elaine Ruffin, Matthew Simmons, Latonya Sterling (Marlon), Eugenia Harrison (Theodore), and Eugene Johnson, Jr. (Tamesha) as well as his sister Bernice Norwood, his brother Nathaniel Johnson, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His family and friends will forever cherish the countless ways he poured into their lives.
He retired from the City of Norfolk but never stopped working for the people around him. Eugene loved to feed others-whether it was a full meal or just a snack, he found joy in making sure others were taken care of. He was also known for driving friends, family, and neighbors wherever they needed to go, earning him a reputation as a beloved unofficial taxi driver in his community.
Eugene's smile, kindness, and unwavering love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
