Eugene Michael O'Hara, age 87, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Gene was the beloved son of Eugene Michael and Julia (Donahue) O'Hara.
Gene's life was defined by dedication, integrity, and a deep commitment to both his work and his loved ones. He graduated from St. Benedict's High School in Newark, earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business from Rutgers University in 1962, and continued his education with postgraduate studies at City College of New York from 1962 to 1968.
His distinguished 40-year career with the Prudential Insurance Company began at age 18 in the mailroom. Demonstrating vision, dedication, and leadership, Gene steadily rose through a series of accounting and financial roles. He served as Vice President of Accounts from 1971 to 1973, Vice President and Comptroller from 1979 to 1982, and ultimately, he served as the Chief Financial Officer from 1982 until his retirement in 1992. Known for his strategic thinking and principled leadership, Gene helped guide Prudential's financial direction during a time of growth and transformation.
Most importantly, Gene was devoted to his family. He recognized his greatest blessing was his marriage to Lorna H. O'Hara and a loving father to Bridgit O'Hara Riley, Thomas M. O'Hara and his wife Lisa, Janine C. O'Hara, Lorna D. O'Hara, and Douglas C. O'Hara. Gene found great joy in watching his grandchildren grow and thrive, always taking pride in their accomplishments and unique qualities. He is survived by his nine grandchildren: Nolan, Luke, Tommy, John Brian, Chantell, Makayla, Sydney, Finn, and Keller.
Beyond his professional achievements, Gene remained deeply engaged in education and public service He was also a Trustee and Chair of the Board at St. Benedict's Preparatory School for 15 years, and a member of the Rutgers University Board of Governors for 15 years, including serving as Chair for 3 years. Gene's commitment to healthcare was evident in his role as Chair and Board Member of Cathedral Healthcare, a group of five hospitals in Newark, New Jersey, where he served for 5 years. Additionally, he was an active member of the Financial Executives Institute and the New Jersey Council of the Arts. Gene was a man of faith, he was an active member of Tower Hill Church in Red Bank, New Jersey and the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, Florida. After retiring, Gene pursued his love of liberal arts education, taking courses in philosophy, literature, and history. His curiosity and appreciation for lifelong learning remained a defining part of who he was.
Gene lived in several communities throughout his life-including East Brunswick, Rumson (New Jersey), Westlake Village (California), Naples, and Bonita Springs (Florida)-each one shaped by his generosity and wisdom.
A lifelong learner and deep thinker, Gene often drew inspiration from literature and the world around him. His favorite animal was the turtle, because, as he liked to say, "You never get anywhere unless you stick your neck out." He also found lasting meaning in his favorite poem, The Rock by T.S. Eliot, which reflected his introspective spirit and faith in something greater than himself.
Gene will be remembered for his kindness, the values he passed down, the love he gave freely, and the light he brought to those around him. He had a warm, welcoming spirit and treated everyone with respect and dignity. Above all, he was deeply committed to his family, who loved him dearly and will miss him tremendously. To his grandchildren, he was nothing less than a hero. We who are left behind will keep him alive in our hearts with our wonderful memoires of him until we are reunited.
In honoring Gene's final wishes, his family is having a private service.

I worked with Gene legally representing Prudential in Washington DC. He is one of the finest persons I have ever known and it was a privilege to work with and to have him as my mentor and friend

Very sorry for the entire O'Hara clan. Gene was a man of diverse interests who generously shared his time and talents. He had a wonderful gift for making all those around him feel welcome, included and special. He touched many lives and continues to inspire. This world has parted company with one of its greats.

Behind his gruff exterior, Gene was a warm-hearted , deep thinking supporter of those in need and those he felt were genuine and free of pretense. He was of great help to me personally, and joined in making sure that Rutgers students in Newark received the best the University could provide. He was a model of organizational leadership and a true friend.
